I dunno about the controversy with all y'alls, but I enjoyed this episode; that might be because I went in with low expectations, though. I find Fluttershy's shyness to often be a bit shallow and overplayed in other episodes (Dragonshy, I'm looking at you), so its absence was fine for me. Similarly, I was expecting the CMCs to be glorified and wesleyised, like younger characters often are in shows with younger audiences, and was glad to see them fouling things up and behaving like... well, like actual children. So, low expectations exceeded, and so I liked it.

Something I want to say: I think Fluttershy's eventual determination played a lot better in this episode than it did in Dragonshy, because 1) it was foreshadowed and 2) she had better reason to man up (pony up?). The cockatrice came off as a much bigger threat than the dragon did, probably because it had already "killed" Twilight, and had not already been established as a sentient creature that was largely minding its own business.

I disagree. There are many a people, self included, that are well past the comparative age of those kids who still have little or no idea to what they actually want to do with their life. That's exactly how I felt about Snips & Snails. They ate up precious time that could have been given to Trixie, or any of the others. Worse yet, Trixie only had one episode so the damage was devastating. At least Gilda got a lot of time to shine, she didn't have to share her episode with Snips & Snails. I can't say the same thing for Trixie.

If anyone cares, here's my two cents:

. Rarity was fun, and the CMC where Ok I guess. All in all It was better than I expected -but still not very good. The story was too predictable, and basically the same setup as "Dragonshy".

(Once again Fluttershy acts gently and cowardly until she defends someone from what she herself fears, - at which point she immediately turns into a tough-guy.The pace was good, but they should have focused more on either:.

-The forest part: Adding a scene where the CMC or twilght had a scene where they encountered the cockatrice (and both fail against it) would have added suspense to when Fluttershy faced it.

- Or the babysitting part.

Mixing them together felt weird, as this episode was seemingly more about Fluttershys double personality than of Cutiemarks, babysitting, ADD etc.

All in all, I am not disappointed but I still hope that this is not the benchmark for the CMC episodes, and hope that the one that airs next week will handle them better.

Couple things I realized in this episode:

Rarity and Applejack are friends, but they had never introduced their same-age sisters to one another. This indicates to me that they, at least, keep their family lives to themselves. Or maybe, they are friends by way of another Pony. This makes me wonder, considering the wild differences between the five Ponyville-based ponies, just how they became friends? And then it hit me: Pinkie Pie could be the glue that holds them together.

Also, Fluttershy is awesome, just as Rainbow and Rarity had their moments to shine in previous episodes. I am going to make a guess that next week's episode is the one where the Cutie Mark Crusaders are shown in a more positive light. Not that I didn't have a blast with them here.

'The Stare' is probably just what the other ponies call Fluttershy suddenly ponying up and browbeating the fuck out of some critter. I don't think it qualifies as a supah magical powah.

After i saw it on a stream i thought too, that it was a bad episode (ok, not that bad) maybe the worst of the whole series.

But after a rewatch with better quality i like it much much more, because i could concentrate more about the face expression and little hints and gags than on a stream, and lesser about the CMC. :)

I guess they are pretty much the same thing, but I got a couple of laughs out of "Call of the Cutie". Retro Cheerilee and Apple Bloom's salesman fail - I think I smiled once from "Stare Master" when Fluttershy gave the chickens stink eye and that was it, no real laughs, catchy songs or sweet animation/reaction shots.

Basically a bad episode. I don't even mind the CMC, it was just that nothing really happened to follow the main devices of learning about friendship. I found it poorly written and not too engaging; the dialogue of Fluttershy initially trying to control the crusaders just had nothing to it, neither did their activities.

It was a bit of a let down, though I did enjoy sweetie's number, and the animation was lots of fun as usual; along with cock-thingy. For me, definately the worst, but that doesn't mean it wasn't still fun, and better than most of the competition from other shows. She is constantly showing new aspects of her personality, and the development cames from her gaining confidence as she starts do deal with more than just the animals at the cottage.

There is a great deal of importance between her stepping up to that dragon, and then forcing herself to repeat the lessons learned in Dragonshy to escape from the hydra and learning to put a cockatrice in its place.

Her big character flaw is that she's completely non-confrontational.

It makes all the sense of the wolrd for her character to be developing in this direction.

Will the stare show up again? I'm sure it will, it has already appeared in Dragonshy, we just didn't know she had done it against her pet animals before doing it to that bigass dragon.

Will it be used ALL THE TIME? Fuck no. You don't reuse the same trick in every episode.

The first episode (two parter) is decent, the second episode (the tickets) was pretty meh.

I think episode 5 is when it really picks up.

I'm going to be frank here. If you didn't like this episode, poni probably isn't for you.

It was all about cuteness and had all the characteristic clever writing you could possibly expect with the hammer bit and the lullaby. If you still didn't like it, you're probably one of those guys who only dares to like Rainbow Dash-centric episodes because she's the closest thing to making it a little more in the PPG direction, and are too scared to admit you can find something sweet, endearing or cute entertaining on those qualities alone, and thus have no business watching or talking about this show.

Fluttershy wasn't overly annoying, the SURPRISE SINGING was ok. CMC needed to be slapped every time they did their CMC _____ IS GO cheer.

Spike is helping Twilight with her transformation magic and she changes the dragon into a Male Pony.
Rarity comes by TS's place and sees the new "mysterious and exotic" colt that is visiting her friend
He uses the chance to finally ask Rarity out for a date amazed at how she seems to like his looks.
With new found confidence he is dashing and able to charm her on this night on the town, even putting a dragonlily behind her ear.
But the magic starts to wear off and he changes back into his old self slowly. In a panic he grabs the lilly and runs away, leaving Rarity wondering if it was something she said.
Depressed at why everything so perfect had to end, he begs TS to change him again, but she lets him know the magic spell was a one in a million accident.
Rarity bursts in crying about being dumped at the date, begging Twilight to tell her where he could be.
Spike hides back looking at the lily and sighs.
Later that night Rarity is sobbing on her bed when in a plume of unseen green flame a scroll appears and the lily falls besides it.
She reads the letter and his goodbyes to the wonderful pony of his dreams.
Spike mopes and Twilight tries to comfort him.
