You know, the guys questioning Celestia's divine rank in the previous thread had some interesting points, though personally I've never seen her as anything more then some kind of simple old deity you might find before the days of monotheism, that is, she is a god who represents one or more aspects of pony life rather then a all knowing omnipotent being. We already know that parts of Equestria seem to have aspects Greek mythology so it's not really much of a stretch to think of her as sun god with powers mostly limited to manipulating celestial bodies and otherwise a powerful, immortal pony figure.

Though another way of looking at is it that Luna and Celestia are both ponies born into great power because their unique talent (all ponies have one) involved god like things but are still limited in scope. This sort of makes Twilight particularly grim as a protagonist seeing as she has a open ended unique talent. Oh hey, most unicorns use magic to do their unique talent, but Twilight's talent is the use of magic itself. Real nice, so while Rarity can use her magic to manipulate cloth and sew amazing dresses, Twilight can just MAGIC them into existence.

Long and short of all this comes back to what alot of fans have suspected; Twilight is important to Celestia because she represents near limitless potential.

Princess isn't even a thing, its current understanding is pretty recent. The wife of a Prince is a Lady and his daughters and granddaughters are Ladies, or other similar terms. In fact, to my understanding the word was originally used to just refer to pretty young ladies.

Not that there's anything wrong with interpreting it in its current form, just that it's pretty easy to come up for explanations for why she's a Princess in-universe.

Pretty much this, Friendship is Magic isn't some grand example of modern animation at it's finest, it does the trick quite well for a program on the budget though and it's nice to see ponies that squash and stretch like cartoon characters rather than the otherwise static and dull previous generations who couldn't get sick or hurt.

Friendship is Magic could actually pass for a real cartoon and not a twenty minute long toy commercial. It has a amusing story, good characterisation and a nice bit of slapstick humour on the side. It's easy to see why people are impressed with it when the previous generations had everyone expecting another shitty season fuelled by nostalgia alone.

Friendship is Magic has managed to get beyond that to the point the toys it's designed to sell don't seem good enough for the show itself.

It utilizes the tools in Flash more then MLP does. While its not exactly living up to some normal standards we have seen, Wakfu isn't some cookie cutter animation like MLPFIM is. Don't get me wrong, I love Princess Tutu, but not because of the animation. The animation was run of the mill, adequate, without any particular lapse in quality or any real flash, they did a steady job and told the story well.

Princess Tutu is awesome because you come thinking it's going to be a monster of the week magic girl show about ballet and then you get 26 episodes of fighting against the fate of their very own fairy fair tragedy they are written into.

You see two magic girls, one good and one bad dance off in ballet to the DEATH with the protagonist lacking a dance partner so in order to give off the required passion she dances a ballet for two people without a partner and injures herself performing the leaps on her own.

It exceeds expectations with it's story telling, but otherwise the animation was nothing to write home about.

When you look at animation, you look at motion. If the motion looks jarring, choppy when it's not supposed to be, fake, and just plain not believable, it's bad animation.

Details are all very nice, but when they hamper believability they are a liability.

Those models might have a hundred little details, but they still move like paper cutouts. Same with most anime; lots of details, very little motion.

Third of all. Arms are not elastic. They do have joints. While you can argue exaggeration is key to a cartoon and one of the key principles of animation, it doesn't mean every show has to implement them everytime.

This is such an important point.

Arms aren't pieces of paper rotating on a 2D surface. When arm joins move, they do NOT look like a Flash symbol being rotated. That's why you have to draw every frame, because to move objects believably you can't just rotate and scale them. That's why there are different drawings for the ponies' different leg positions, instead of a single drawing being rotated and scaled.

Detail can be gorgeous when employed effectively, but it generally isn't practical for animation (among other things). Look at any Studio Ghibli film, for example. Compared to most anime, it is very, very simply rendered. However, the movement is always extremely fluid and natural. Less detail allows for more of the production time to be spent on properly animating, rather than painstaking rendering.

Some people like detail overload, though. If you think excess of accessories is awesome, more power to you! I tend to find more elegance in simplicity myself, whether it's animation, design, or just about any other visual art :>
