02/20/11(Sun)20:28 No.23659563Twilight Sparkle shoved the door open with her horn, trudging slowly into her dimly lit home as the yellow lines of late afternoon daylight slashed through the partly-closed shutters of her ground level windows.
It had not been a good day.
She should have suspected things were going to take a wrong turn very early on, when Applejack had invited her to the farm to help bake pies for the upcoming Solstice Festival. The prudent farmpony had requested Twilight's help managing the many brick ovens she'd intended to use to bake the lemon, blueberry, cherry, and strawberry pies to a delicious crispness. However, Twilight, in her eagerness to assist, had begged Applejack to let her use the new Heat spell she'd been studying for the past two weeks. Applejack had been reluctant- "I don't know, sugh, I'm a pretty old fashioned pony"- but Twilight had convinced her to allow it. With concentration and some dark utterings, the violet unicorn's horn had glistened, and rays of warm orange light had descended from the air into the kitchen.
Unfortunately, Twilight had underestimated the intensity of the spell. Within minutes, the pies were all smoking, and before Twilight could undo the spell, more than half of them were blackened to a crisp. Applejack had tried to maintain a cheerful demeanor- "It's all right, Twilight, it just means more food for the critters"- but it was clear her work had been set back considerably.
It hadn't gotten any better as the day had worn on. Rarity had needed assistance sewing ribbons for the trees around the town, and Twilight had thought that here was a task she could not fail. She had convinced Rarity to attempt a joint sewing spell- a union of their telekinetic powers. Rarity had been reluctant at first, but Twilight had persuaded her to go along. Unfortunately, Twilight's stronger magical abilities had overriden Rarity's attempts to guide the delicate needlework, and most of the fabric she had collected had been ruined. |
