Are the ponies actually best friends? Which ones are best friends in that case? In WITCH the group had clear duos of best friends, Will and Taranee, Irma and Hay Lin, Cornelia and Elyon, but what about MLP? So far all we've seen are them being ENEMIES.

Applejack and Rarity don't like each others.
Rainbow Dash and Applejack don't get along.
Rarity and Pinkie Pie aren't that fond of one another.
And so on.
Nobody seems to like Fluttershy either.

Equestria is too large to be covered with a map like this. There are supposed to be be other areas of the realm with towns larger than Ponyville, which is supposed to be kind of a backwater. You should get rid of Canterlot and make it a map of Ponyville and the surrounding environs.

Well, the show is about building and maintaining friendships and getting to know people. If everyone got along with each other perfectly, it would kind of defeat the purpose.

And perhaps nobody talks to Fluttershy because... she's shy

I've been thinking about Rainbow's personality since the last episode.

I didn't really like rainbow dash as a character at first, mainly because she is kind of rude to the other characters and never gets called on it. Also the character felt rather random, switching between super-confidence, and crushing feelings of inferiority.) Lately however, I've changed my way of thinking. (Let's see of you can follow my reasoning.) Basically the character feels like she really need to earn everything, which is the reason she always seem like a braggart. She gets hard on herself, not because she cannot live up to her own expectations, but rather fears that she cannot live up to the expectations of others. Whom she, despite her attitude has really high opinions of.

She must be the best, because the people around her are, and also deserve -the best. Ass such, íf she constantly failed in her ambitions to be the best, then she would consider herself unworthy of being among the others.

What kind of mythical beast are those?

Sun set on in Ponyville, caking the surroundings in a blue twilight. Through the nightfall a thousand lights of fireflies flickerd, making a very pretty sight at the skyline of the rolling hills beyond fluttershy's house. Night times were very quiet and slow-paced in contrast to the bustling days full of birdsong and other animal chirping. Here Fluttershy could relax in solitude.

After some minutes of simply staring out at the clouds fluttershy went down to the river for a drink and to wash her face. She looked in her reflection: a short girl with round cheecks faur that reached the mid-back. She had fair, unblemished skin and far-apart eyes that curved slightly upwards, with a lithe body and small features. She was all ready for bed, dressed in a slender nightgown. After siping up water she stretched out and looked around only to be met with the eyes of a friend. She squeaked in embarasement at being seen in this state of dress.

Fluttershy took one with her and nibbled on it with the reserve she awlways had, while Twilight took another and looked pleadingly at Fluttershy for persmission to eat more.

By the end of it, they two had finished the entire basket.

I don't know what to think about this.

Hi, friends.
I've been thinking - there are six Elements of Harmony and each of them has its spirit present in each of six main characters. Looking at the plots of later episodes we can notice that the spirits actually match the ponies' personalities.
Twilight Sparkle works with magic all the time.
Pinkie Pie runs all the fun and laughter around.
Fluttershy is nice and kind to everyone.
Rarity shares everything she has with everyone.
These four are obvious, right?
BUT!
We have two ponies left (Rainbow Dash, Applejack) and two Elements of Harmony (Loyalty, Honesty). The second episode matched Loyalty with Rainbow Dash and Honesty with Applejack. But look at the following episodes. Applejack is the one who tries to help as much as she can and she "is always there for everypony", and Rainbow Dash always says what she has in mind, she never lies and is completely honest with everyone.
What do you think? Did Lauren not think this through or did the creators do it for purpose?

"And it's clear that you do, too," Twilight continued. With that, the reserved Fluttershy peeked up. She couldn't deny this.

When Pinkie and Twilight are impressed about the sonic rainboom, she seems almost terrified to admit that she is not able to do it. Instead she lies and says she could do it in her sleep. Rarity isn't my favourite, but every time I see her she surprizes me in a positive way. In most shows being a fashion freak would predestine her to be a shallow and uncaring person. I'm really glad she isn't treated like that.

Because it's one of the greatest examples so far in FiM of the quality of the writers they've hired. It's a really fun, unique episode of a cartoon and is just really wholly entertaining to watch. Pinkie's so vibrantly animated in that episode, Flutterguy (and to a lesser extent the other ponies' ailments) is hilarious, it has Applebloom adorableness without the episode being too centric on her alone, and Zecora looks and sounds awesome. Just to name a few reasons that episode might be popular.

Part 1 of the pilot is fine, has fun first scenes for all the ponies and Spike, and has that great intro. The trouble is part 2, which is too obviously just a series of encounters for each of the ponies to solve a problem, making the show feel like a cliche storm even if Pinkie and AJ's scenes are perfectly okay. Plus the way they dispenses with Luna by making her suddenly go all beta flat-out sucks and makes the whole enterprise feel toothless.

That said I liked it the first time I watched it, but it doesn't stand up to repeat viewings well at all.

My Review of the show:

Part 1

The main characters of the show are a variety of anthropomorphized ponies. The difference in design mostly consists of varying colors so that the toys of the main characters can all use the same form factor. Another method employed to safe money is the uniform color fill. So like in most cartoons today there are no shades to be found.

The main theme of the show is the promotion of virtue ethics. This is achieved by equipping each pony with a specific positive characteristic. When these character traits are combined they unleash an ultimate force. The obvious implication seems to be that moral agents must possess all the positive features in order to be perfect. This interpretation is supported by the fact that each individual pony is flawed because it lacks a skill another pony possesses.

At the end of each episode Twilight Sparkle reports to her princess about what she learned about friendship. The second main theme of the show therefore seems to be the acquisition of social competence which is linked with the virtue ethics. It is highlighted that in order to function socially every pony has to sacrifice or transform parts of their personality because in their current state they are too extreme. The character virtues must be restrained, as like achieving a middle point between two extreme options. Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash for instance are each at the extreme ends of the same spectrum. The show tries to convince us that in order to realize social stability they must be more moderate.

It is unclear what form of government the show promotes. It is explained that all ponies submit themselves to the supreme fiat of royalty. But it is never explored if the ponies still are free to govern their internal affairs or if there is a supervisory body so that the princess can not violate basic pony rights.

Part 2

The authenticity of the show is undermined, however, because coincidentally the consequences of the ponies actions are always positive when they seek to conform to the show's philosophy and always negative when their actions deviate from the previously explained middle ground of virtues. This is unrealistic because in the real world one often has to choose between one's principles and a favored outcome. "My little Pony" entirely ignores this conflict and instead tries to portray the illusion that the moral agent will always be rewarded when he possesses certain virtues. The question if these virtues should be uphold even if this may result in bad consequences is never addressed.

Another problem with the show is it's anti-intellectualism. It is often hinted at that it is better to simply believe a pleasant falsehood then to accept a harsh reality.

The show, at times, also contains mixed messages. In one episode the ponies are afraid of a Zebra because it is different than they are. At the end it turns out that their fears were irrational and that they should be willing to accept other people and not discriminate against them despite their differences. In another episode, however, Pinkie Pie has a grudge against the griffin Helga. Helga is a punk who rejects to adopt the social norms of the pony society. Pinkie Pie then starts to publicly mock and humiliate Helga who is ultimately shunned and excluded from the in-group. All this is shown in a positive light which seems to imply that it is not wrong to commit hate crimes against unpleasant individuals.

If the simplistic and questionable moral compass, the one dimensional characters and the unrealistic setting doesn't bother you the show can be quite entertaining for a while. But after a few episodes the slapstick and comedic relief tends to be just as repetitive as the main theme of the show itself, which I described in my first post.

Twilight's the smartest member of the cast, and it's very often used to achieve certain goals that would have otherwise been impossible, or clear up confusion due to other ponies lacking her knowledge. Even the goal of Feeling Pinkie Keen was to let Twilight know that she should keep her mind open to more possibilities on how the world around her works, instead of insisting that the only way she knows how shit works is the right way.

In fact, the entire dynamic of Twilight's character is that she lacked a balanced life at the start of the series; she's incredibly intelligent and skillful with magic, but lacked companionship and communication, which made her come off as a loner who doesn't want to make friends. The whole goal of her in this series and with her friendship reports is for her to learn to live a fuller, better life, but she doesn't have to give up being smart in order to obtain that.
