One of the reasons I maybe couldn't take it seriously was that the gore went to a certain point in the middle. Further than what should have been comfortable, but not fully committed. I've seen worse (animal) injuries in life what was described in the fic - so I just couldn't really be grossed out when my mind was fixing possible injury details or giving me more information than the story was.

There were hints of something that could have been deeper though.

I certainly wouldn't recommend Cupcakes as a good read, but it just didn't strike me as disturbing. I totally get it not being for everyone (or even anyone, maybe) though.

Twilight would go a massive teleport hax spell. Seemingly, she would strike from multiple angles dozens of times in the same instant. Think a giant ATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATAT!

Fluttershy would summon a stampede of critters, ranging in size from bunnies to manticores.

Applejack's would be a one-blow, huge damage kind of deal. She'd throw out her lasso, pull her opponent in, then waste her with a ultra-powerful applebucking kick.

Rarity would summon tons of makeup, clothes and accessories, and give her opponent the most extreme makeover ever. They'd lose health from sheer embarrassment at how ridiculous they look.

Pinkie Pie would start twitching like a maniac, then all sorts of horribly unlucky shit would happen to her opponent that test the boundaries of Toon Physics. Anvils from the sky, being crushed be steamrollers, slamming into trees, barrels of TNT, you name it.

I can't keep working on the custom tutorial until I find the yellow paint, auggggh. I was going to pick up with Diamond Tiara but I wanted the tutorial to follow one pony, start to finish.

Has anyone else liked every episode of this show and every main cast pony almost equally? with the exception of how fabulous and funny Rarity can be and how fun on screen Pinkie is.

Well, let's see.
1. It's an early piece. I wrote the period stuff and the Apple Bloom short first but this was the longest. It was an experiment on my part to see if I had any talent (and if you read bad end you'll see that I was wrong)
2 I was inspired by Severing. I saw how grim it was and wanted to take a swing at it. However, I wasn't about to plagiarize someone else's hard work. So I went in differant direction. Shock value, serial killer. And made it as gory as I was willing to go. I pulled punches. I wanted a reaction and I got it.
3 it is a shipping satire. I wanted to poke fun at the Pinkie/Dash fans. However, no body knew this until I said something.

Grimdark discussion thread? Sure ok.

Cupcakes and Severing were both pretty bad stories for what they were. Not because of the content, but because both authors totally failed in keeping the characters original personalities intact. I could not feel sympathetic for them because they were too far gone from their original selves. Putting the characters in such outrageous situations didn't help either, and the combined two problems made for a very droll read. Both were about as unsettling as Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood.

A good grimdark story should be at least believable on the level that the show provides so the reader is not disconnected. An example would be Fluttershy far out in the woods caring for animals, gravely hurting herself, and being unable to get back home safely. The story goes in-depth explaining what Fluttershy is thinking, the pain she is feeling, and the overwhelming hopelessness of her present situation. Can she make it home? Maybe, but it's going to be a horrible ride.

The reader can believe that would and could feasibly happen and the plot isn't so "Jason goes to space" shoe-on-head stupid that keeping Fluttershy in-character isn't impossible.

I don't really care for grimdark, but I do enjoy being entertained by fanfiction. Those two stories however, fell hilariously flat.

We should all do this. We must ALL make a fic about how Rainbow Dash dies a horrible death.
It can be called the Rainbow Dash-out (not to be confused with the episode where we find out that she is without a doubt a lesbian).

Here, I will start:

One day Rainbow Dash was flying through the Everfree Forest for no particular reason when she was unexpectedly struck by a strong down draft which tossed her to the earth. She tumbled head first into the ground right on top of the bon fire that THE GREAT AND POWERFUL TRIXIE had been using to cook her pathetic scraps of food gathered out of the trash cans that the citizens of the Forrest tend to leave laying about (Yes, there are citizens there and they are all invisible). All four of Rainbow Dash's legs broke on impact, leaving her to wallow in horrid pain as she caught fire. She rolled back and forth just as she had learned in school but to no avail. She died screaming and wailing in agony and terror, and her last thought was that of regret at having never truly admitted her love to her most cherished pony friend.
However THE GREAT AND POWERFUL TRIXIE was much entertained by this, and managed to video record it with her hand held camera. She will post it on her Youtube account within the hour, for all those who may be interested.

From what I've seen, she's one of three things:
1) (By far the most popular) Straight-up evil. Or at the very least a God-Emperor-of-Dune style monster. She's a goddess and she treats the ponies like the pawns they are.
2) Something like Queen Elizabeth in Blackadder II - not necessarily evil, but certainly not cognizant of why anyone would have a problem with executions and locking up enemies in the dungeon and such.

I disagree. I've seen the show, I don't need to be reminded what the characters are actually like.

The whole reason to have grimdark stories about a show like MLP is because of the massive contrast in tone, and how it allows entirely different character behaviors and subjects than the show could deal with. Otherwise it's just, like I wrote upthread, an episode script that couldn't be used as an episode because it has a sad ending.

You just need to be able to accept them as different takes on the universe. Think of them as being what-if-Stephen-King-wrote-MLP if that makes it easier.

BTW I just finished severing. I'm quite widely read, and I thought it was absolutely fucking superb, clearly and efficiently written - essentially flawless - and at the end of it all it's not actually even as grimdark as it could have been go Spike!. Whoever wrote it, if they can achieve the same level of suspense and excitement with thier own characters not that that isn't a big if, seems to be sure to be able to get published.

My take is this: Celestia is thousands of years old, effectively immortal, well-nigh omnipotent...and bored out of her skull.

She doesn't MEAN to be cruel, but honestly, after living as long as she has and having learned and experienced as much as she has, she simply doesn't know any other way of dealing with the ponies in her care other than to treat them like children's playthings.

Twilight Sparkle gets the worst of this, because for the moment she's Celestia's "pet project". Like the heroes of ancient Greek myths, TS is the plaything of the gods.

The ponies think she's a goddess, when in fact she's a bored little girl playing with dolls.
