All that aside though, it's quickly getting to the point where ponies I originally didn't rate too highly (but never hated) are becoming fierce competition.

Rainbow Dash has never been at the bottom of the six for me, but she's always been too brash and outspoken, often the loud one who acts like a dick to the others, but she's done pretty well lately.

I used to rate Rarity lowest, but since she got a episode with Applejack, she's had interesting characterisation as a ODC fashion designer who must have everything neat and tidy coupled with DAT VOICE.

Applejack I feel has been slipping because she's always represented as the traditionalist to the point of even managing to seem prejudiced against anything new, but she manages to do well regardless.

Twilight Sparkle has always been pretty popular as the main character and her character has been filled out beyond the one the audience is meant to relate to.

Pinky Pie started off a bit too lolrandum but every since you saw her own episode with Gilda you know she's capable of subtly and she represents all the slapslick cartoon humour in the show becoming her own droopy in terms of sheer bullshit gag powers and insight.

Fluttyshy has had her moments, though she remains the one people just find adorable with a few times where she'll break out of it for the sake of a joke.

Everyone, side characters included has become much more defined well beyond the scope of any normal MLP, each with their own flaws and merits, it's really neat.

That's kind of a weakness, there, because if one of the group is missing or otherwise unavailable, the Elements can't be used. However, when Celestia was shown using the Elements in the prologue by herself, she was all by herself.

My theory is that if any of the Element-holders dies, their power passes to the next most appropriate pony in the group. Celestia wants Twilight to learn all about friendship so that she'll be the most honest, the most generous, the kindest, laughingest, loyalest one. See, a lot of answers turn out like this, the real trick here seems to be getting character centric episodes where each pony is given more depth. The last episode where Fluttershy was the main character is Dragonshy and it helped her, but as you say she's had many of episodes not doing much.

I imagine this could change when she gets that episode with all the baby sitting and becomes overwhelmed (like EVERY baby sitting story line ever).

Fluttershy will, however always be waifu tier.

Pretty soon, people were treating fursecution as a real phenomenon (which has since become a self-fulfilling prophecy), and treating furry more as an orientation than a fetish. I'm not sure if that's true, but I have been in the furry transformation subfandom for more than ten years, and I can state that transgendered individuals are far more common in the furry fandom than appear to be elsewhere.
