Actually, the cutie marks were originally applied to the background ponies randomly. They are not animated randomly. If they were, we would not have consistent background ponies as their marks would be constantly changing.

There is an "incidental pony" library, as the animator dude called it, that contains the models for these gals, there hair, accessories, etc. There are only a few base models. Prominent model sharers include daisy and carrot top, derpy and raindrop, moondancer and lemon drop, rose and lyra. They can change the pony color and cutie marks on the fly, or remove them entirely. which they sometimes do- see Showers' appearance in Fall Weather Friends.

They can very easily "scramble" a background pony to appear different, but they didn't bother for the male pegasi in this episode for some reason.

The more I watch this show (just gotten up to 'Bridle Gossip') the more fucked up I see it.

Only the highest caste, the unicorns, can build and write. So presumably the other castes are uneducated somewhat. And they keep dragon kids as slaves! The one adult dragon was cast out and everyone was afraid of it, but Spike gets no comment. What happens when he grows up?

Also, male ponies seem to be an underclass. The only ones I've seen so far are Big Mac (who always works), soldiers, chariot riders (who don't seem to talk) and two kids.

And finally, the Everfree forest. Why is it so weird to them? Because it's NATURAL. Plants grow by themselves, animals look after themselves, clouds move normally. The ponies are but gods to their ecosystem.

OK, I work in Philosophy and Religious Studies at a university, and I am the only staunch atheist in the department. Needless to say, I'm usually sympathetic to other atheists.
BUT anyone whose beliefs were rocked by Feeling Pinkie Keen is a man-child. The message in that episode ISN'T "blind faith is okay." Rather, its "You shouldn't dismiss another's point of view just because you can't understand it." This message is totally in line with scientific empiricism: fields of science are redefined over time as people find new evidence that contradicts the current model. That's why the science method works in the first place.
Twilight Sparkle never abandons empiricism - in fact, she is convinced that Pinkie's predictions are true ONLY after the evidence became overwhelming. The only "faith" the episode reaffirms is our faith in causality, even when the causes and effects seem to contradict what we currently believe.
