I found it interesting to compared the old designs to the new. It's possible to prefer the new ones simply through exposure (psychological principle: repeated exposure makes things more appealing).

So I really tried to break it down and figure out what designs were better (feel free to add your own, this might be a good topic of discussion).

Twilight: I'm not sure I like the old one. It's a collection of very pale colors that makes her look nearly albino in Lauren's concept art. Something about Sparkle's darker palate with a light pink accent makes her appear likewise a deeper character. Perhaps darker colors are a better choice for an introvert for that reason.

Pinkie vs Surprise: Hard tell for me. Pinkie was originally my least favorite colored pony due to being very one note in her scheme. However Surprise suffers from the same thing old Twilight had. She's pale as a ghost. Though, I always thought Pinkie would have been better served as a Pegasus. Not much more of a free spirit than her, is there? However, the fact she's an Earth pony does give her an interesting edge of hidden eccentricity. Bah, I digress. But overall, I might have prefered Surprise's colors just a touch more. I think there is room for at least one or two white ponies. She'd have looked better with a darker mane color, though.

Firefly vs Rainbow Dash: Easy! Rainbow Dash. Always thought she was the best colored. A relaxing cool blue with a wild rainbow mane and tail fits both her personality and my eyes. For that reason, she became a wallpaper for my comp despite not being my favorite. Firefly, on the other hand, I do like her more than other G1 color schemes (some blue to counter the pink, mixing light and dark), but she can't hold a candle to Dash.

The main issue with the new designs is their ears and noses, which frankly are very un-horse-like, but the pluses listed above make up for it.

They are all the same design. You're talking about color keys.

Rarity: Only real difference is that streak in her hair, something Twilight stole. Overall, I think that it fits her character better to eschew that streak. It's like a dash of wild that her character doesn't appear to posses. Plus, the solid color just looks a tad better to me.

Ensemble: We're all familiar with FiM together. The balance is pretty nice. No single color overwhelms and there is a nice variety of darker (Twilight, AJ) and lighter (Fluttershy, Rarity) shades between characters. And a bit of wildness (Pinkie's Pink) with some relaxing colors (Dash and AJ).

The old cast, however . . .OH GOD THE PINK! Nearly every character has it somewhere on their body. On top of that, other than AJ, everyone is incredibly pale. We have light with white hair next to pale yellow with pink hair, next to pink Firefly, next to a pure white Rarity with a pink hair. It's just not an appealing balance.

In the end: I think the new characters vastly improved the color schemes and I'm glad they got updated.

Not discussed: Posey and AJ, for being too similar.

I just thought it was interesting, and just one person's attempt on one version of Derpy.
Plus it was something to read while waiting though the 3 week episodeless period.

I find all versions of Derpy interesting in their own way.

I personally enjoy most the idea of Derpy as being some reality bending pony. and her weirdness is only a product of her constantly bending reality (so it all makes sense in her world).

I have a really hard time seeing the ponies as humans, but wanted to sketch it a little any way, haha. (Despite the fact that humans are probably my weakest area of knowledge as an artist.
