Someone mentioned that gradients =/= shading. Having a flat gradient on a flat image doesn't really do anything to build depth or form because ... gosh how to I word myself without being an awkward derp? Its kind of like she's a piece of paper, as is. Sure, her legs and head are a different colour, but her legs are all the same sort of colour/value, you dig?

It isn't a technique I'm fond of (I've just never employed it myself,), but you can do the gradient thing and then erase parts of it. Like, the outer shell of her ear would actually be lighter than the inside, because it protrudes.

Thanks for the tip. I started out thinning out my paints, but the watered-down acrylics weren't sticking to the plastic and creating droplets (picture related). Straight acrylics stuck better, but after that first layer of white, I should have switched to thinner paints. Lesson learned.

I think severing is arguably darker than cupcakes. Cupcakes is just graphic, shocking and in your face like a crummy B grade horror flick. Severing actually has plot, emotion and characterisation than tie it down a bit and stop it from becoming an absurd joke.

But I'd lose respect for myself if I intentionally did something that I knew would be upsetting to so many people and would be used to troll repeatedly and it isn't something I feel strongly about.
