First of all, it's Rarity's idea to even make all the dresses, an idea she forces onto her friends. Applejack didn't even WANT a dress, and plans only to sell apples and apple accessories at the Grand Galloping Gala. Furthermore, Rarity immediately jumps to the idea of having a fashion show with these dresses, dresses she is making on commission. Clearly, her only motivation to make these last minute outfits is either to make her friends pay for a chance to stroke her own ego in public, or to make a profit off of a marketing opportunity. If she was giving away these dresses, or even loaning them out, like designers do in our world to actresses and the sort at awards shows, that'd be one thing, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
So whatever Rarity's motivations, the other ponies agree to the plan, apparently ready to pay for the dresses she makes for them. If that's the case, why, then, of COURSE they have the right to have the dresses made to their specifications. Frankly, Rarity is in the wrong in having made the first batch of outfits without any input from them; perhaps if she had included her friends on the original designs, they could have compromised and found a healthy middle ground. But she just forges ahead, and her customers are quite unimpressed. |
