I have a question for writefriends.

How do you find the beginning of your story? I dont mean the plot or outline or anything. I know what I want to write and where I want it to go, but I just dont know how to begin the story for other people.

Any advice? (advice beyond ~skip around~ and write a scene you feel like. I don't like doing this, it makes things feel weak to me later on. I would rather have a weak and crappy beginning to revise into something better later. I just am failing at getting even that. I just don't know how to introduce a world and characters everyone already knows)

Have you considered creating an outline? I don't use them, but they may help you out.

You need to think of the first scene that you want to tell the reader about. You need to think about the first character you want to introduce to the reader. You need to think about what that character is doing when you introduce them. There: subject, verb. Write the sentence. If anything, you're probably overthinking it.

For Stuck, I wrote out the ending first. Kinda like what George Lucas did with Star Wars.

I pretty much work backwards until I have no more ideas, then start the beginning. So far I have two fully written endings and the rest of the story outlined.

If I get stuck on continuing the plot, I'll write out dialogue I KNOW I'm using then write actions and narration around the dialogue.

This always seems to be the case.

It's hard because the first line o two has to catch the readers attention and pull them into reading the rest of the story. It's got to catch their interest.

Why is Dash stumbling? What is she coming back from? How did she inadvertently mess things up this time? A good opening will lay down questions that the the reader must have answered, so they keep reading. And THEN there's the idea that your first paragraph or so should lay the groundwork for the theme of the overall story, but that's a whole 'nother mess.

It also helps to have a good beginning and end when you start fleshing out a story. That way you can just write from point A to B. Otherwise I often find that I'm stuck either with an end that I can't seem to get to or a beginning that doesn't go anywhere.
