New Generals should not be remade until the
current one has reached the Image Limit of
150 and is AutoSaging (300+ posts).
Once a new one is established a link to it
should be posted at the end of the old one.

Please only post Generals on /co/

General Images needs to be posted in the
general thread for the Archiver to find. It
should be removed when a new general has been
made. Current system will archive the old
thread when image is removed, while marking the
    new one.

Keywords are needed when making a new general
so the archiver can find it. MLP, My Little
Pony, Ponies, and Hub are picked up as keywords.
Failure to do so means the thread cannot be
    archived.

The problem was that Twilight was too set out to prove Pinkie wrong, A real scientist would see how accurate Pinkie's predictions were and that there were laws to them then just come up with a bullshit theory mix a little bit of quantum magicanics with Schrödinger's pony leave it for some other Schmuck to organize and go do something worthwhile like get themselves killed documenting the crazy-ass creatures that roam around Equestria or stare into the sun for hours.

I just saw the first episode of My Little Pony. I'm shocked over how entertaining it is. I got kinda lost afterwards so I had to wiki abit only to find that I mistook the musical pegasus as 'Fluttershine' rather than Fluttershy. And I musta missed something because no one really mentioned Rarity's name in the first episode.

Well, it looks like Mrs. Faust's DA page is calming down.

I just really pray that she isn't annoyed by the idiots who were trying to shove their opinions down everyone's throats. I really enjoyed this subtle Derpy appearance. It didn't take up the whole show, but it was a cool cameo. Plus we haven't had alot of Looney Toon-ish slapstick in ages. This was actually quite refreshing.

I think it may qualify for best episode so far.

    And I ain't even mad.

Seriously, guys. This can't be the first time you come across a gross misrepresentation of atheism/scepticism/logic on TV. Do you get this riled up every single time?
At this point I've come to accept most people are going to have weird ideas about pretty much any complicated subject. Whatcha gonna do?
I think the smart kids will eventually outgrow superstition whether MLP says it's okay or not. They'll have to figure it out for themselves anyway. It's the only right way to become a rational person.

Yeah. There's some new commentary there as well.

    >Jukashi
    >I hope all this controversy doesn't bother you too much, Lauren; there are a lot of people who are ready to flare up at the least provocation on certain subjects. Personally, as with others, I was a little put off by the "lesson" of the episode, which came off to me as "don't bother trying to understand things"; and, if I was a parent, I'd be worried about my kids being discouraged from science or the like; but that's me! Everyone's going to take things in a different way, and any creator always runs the risk of people seeing something in their work they didn't put there. Despite the moral, I was entertained and enjoying myself throughout the episode until then, and directly after (Celestia! Ha ha!), so it was still a good show from everyone on your team.

    >Commiserating pats-on-the-back in advance of whatever further complaints you receive.

    >Wow. It's so not what I ever hoped anybody would ever take away from that episode. It's a really awful message and I'd never dream of suggesting it.

We have 26 episodes this season, 15 aired, and another 4 announced. That leaves 7 episodes open to speculation... What do we legitimately think is going to happen? What do we want or hope for?

Me, I think it'll end on a 2-parter at the Grand Galloping Gala. Something Terrible will happen, and the Elements of Harmony will come back into play.

I also think that we won't see more Trixie or Gilda this season, but they may have something of a redemption episode in the 2nd season, if there is one.

Remember that episode when one of celestia's OTHER pupils discovered ancient pony fossils in the Zebra land, and Twilight planted fake pony fossils in Equestria because she refused to admit that Ponies and Zebras originated from the same nation.

I agree on the two-parter thing. I'd LOVE a GGG finale. Considering how long we were pondering if they'd forgotten about the Gala since episode 3, it'd definitely be cool way to bring it back big.

Then again I don't want to get my hopes up. Even a single episode with a plot like the first two would be cool. (minus the awkward "trials" thing)

Let's not kid ourselves about how many people out there would like to inject a pro-theism message into the morals of a children's cartoon. A hell of a lot more than would want to inject an a anti-theist message.

    X4 + X9 = X6 + X7
X is everywhere. So if you try to solve for it you get X = X
Which doesn't give you an answer at all. X can be nothing, or X can be something huge. No way of finding out through observation.

All this "lol Dave worked on SM2 so he sucks" crap is getting real old real fast. He was only one of SEVERAL various co-writers of the movie, which would have been shit regardless of who worked on it anyway. All of the other projects he worked on was also terrible shit, and he had very little involvement within those projects as well, being a co-writer of an episode or two at most. Dave was a writer taking various odd-projects to make bills and end's meet. No one that has a viable revenue stream would have ever subjected themselves to working on The Cramp Twins, Angela Anaconda, and various game shows like Frank TV or Singled Out. Up until The Buzz on Maggie (a show which garnered much acclaim which he created and was canceled because it wasn't marketable enough to non-western audiences), he never played a major staff role in the production of any show.

Also, since he was a writer and still had to answer to higher ups at Hasbro and Faust and Co., they would have all had to approve his ideas and he in turn would have to incorporate their ideas as well. If you think that one person has complete and total 100% of how an episode turns out, you're clueless.

A lot of you react to writers instead of the writing itself, kissing the ground that they walk on instead of objectively enjoying the episode and sneering at anyone else who was involved in past unfortunate projects. Until people looked up who work Pinkie Keen, complaints were fairly low, but after that you're shitting blood on the floors because of who's involved rather than the final product, bitching about humor in an episode that was created for the sole purpose of humor and trying to turn the lesson in a religious debate and then blaming the staff rather than your own dumb asses. You are worse than Pitchforkfags.

And now, you're making Lauren Faust feel shitty for wanting a gag-episode that was entertaining, which it was, but are now hung up on morals. Fuck you guys.

    It's mostly about wordings used.

"I refuse to believe anything I can't explain" <-- Twilight's line, and a common misconception (by theists) of how scientists think

"Some things in the world can't be explained" <-- Twilight's stance after converting, an EXTREMELY COMMON theistic argument, practically word for word.

And liberal use of the word "faith"

Faith being believe without evidence, or even in spite of contrary evidence.

The problem was, Twilight wasn't using "faith" when she accepted Pinkie Sense, she was actually being rational, because she'd seen consistent, repeatable evidence that it works. She couldn't explain HOW it works, but the rational belief in the face of constantly seeing THAT it works, is exactly what Twilight did, accept that it's true, even if she can't figure out how.

Faith would be if Twilight accepted Pinkie Sense without having any evidence whatsoever that it was true. That's a really really stupid thing to do. Faith is irrational, and almost never held up as something good and meritous and glorious except by religion, because it has to make belief without evidence seem good, cause that's the only way to justify believing in it.

tldr; Lots of keywords evoked and mirrored arguments of pro-religion, but the events of the episode demonstrated the opposite.

I don't even think the people who wrote the episode knew what they were going for. It's like they just put a funny episode together then said "uh oh, we need a moral, quick think of one!" and the result is a shitty moral that didn't even fall in line with the episode's antics.

"Sometimes you have to trust and listen to your friends, even if they don't make much sense." In a world of magical ponies and mythical horrors, I don't see latent, uncontrollable psionic predictions to be out of place at all. The only difference between Pinkie's abilities and magic is that she doesn't have control over them.

    yet

Could we please stop with the bitching, gracefully accept the fan-service, and move on?

Yeah that's what it's all about.

Guys just stop and think for a second. Pinkie had the ability to predict things, and she was right.

Twilight couldn't get over the idea even though it was clearly happening. She learned to accept it.

That's it. That's the moral. Not to be religious. Not to be atheist. Not any other crap.

Twilight learned to accept something that she couldn't understand but was clearly true, the end.

More importantly, does this mean ponies can have other powers? Are there ponies like Pinkie out there with other strange abilities? Maybe there's ponies who can read minds or something.

Will have to see if it ever comes up again.

Pretty much the theme of the episode.

Pinky had ye old "Achy knees letting her know it's going to rain". A very very common superstition that many people just listen to.

Twilight is booksmart. That's it. She isn't great with people. She isn't great at applied research. She's good at library research and magical studies. It also happens to be her area of pride.

She thought too much of her own abilities and was getting pissed off from being hurt.

If the lines at the very end of the episode where a little different. This discussion would not be occurring.

    >Twilight is booksmart. That's it. She isn't great with people. She isn't great at applied research.
    Glad someone else noticed.
As researchers go, Twilight is not exactly a prime example, even if she's the token analytical person. She has the commonplace but irrational sort of "skepticism" that's actually just a bias in favour of things that sound scientific and against things that sound like superstition, rather than the appropriate open-minded curiosity in the face of data that clearly imply something genuinely unusual is going on.

The episode wasn't about religion. The moral might have been. It certainly was worded like it was.

Different people worked on the show and I'm sure more than one would have jumped at the chance to bolster religion to kids, to a many many many people, that's the single most important moral to teach a kid.

Adding to that is how the moral had really nothing to do with the episode.

    No, seriously.

As has been said hundreds of times in this thread, the episode concerned CURRENTLY unexplainable phenomena that didn't fit established scientific (or in Twilight's case, magical, since "magic" is arbitrarily defined in Equestria) models.

Thousands of years ago, people had no fucking clue why magnetism worked, but it still did. If someone was stubborn enough to say "I CAN'T EXPLAIN THAT RIGHT NOW SO I REFUSE TO BELIEVE IT HAPPENS", wouldn't you think they were fucking stupid?

Don't think of the episode as "pro-religion" because it isn't. It's pro-Saganist if anything.

Fluttershy is an amazingly strong pegasus and the rickshaw is designed to pivot at the axle of the wheels. It makes just as much sense as the moving van.

In Dragonshy, she didn't budge an inch despite having 5 ponies pressing against her.
In Swarm of the Century, she took an apple and crushed it like it was no big deal at all.
And in the pilot episode, she loses grip of Twilight, blaming her lack of grip on only holding bunnies all day.

Yup. Which took actual researchers to accomplish. Not Twilight.

    >>23416141
If you have any idea what actual scientific methodology should look like it's really obvious that Twilight is bad at it. She's not infalliable in this area.

In fact it makes a ton of sense too. She uses magic and very well. How does magic work in MLP? Well, what we do know is it takes concentration.
However, in most universes it also takes an ounce of belief. You need to believe the magic is going to work.
So let's assume it takes belief that it'll work and concentration. You need to believe it to the point where it'll become reality. Mix in growing up with using magic and it'll be as second nature of a phenomenon as a TV is to us. Then throw in enough book reading to reach the equivalent of reading several Sony Manuals....

Ya I'm totally not surprised Twilight has a double standard of magic Vs other things. One thing she really really really understands and is used to. Other stuff? Not so much.

If the moral was about how proper scientic research is a long boring ass event and requires months of documentation...

It's the use of words like "faith" and "belief" that cause this stupid controversy in the first place. You don't need to "believe in" something that has been proven true in 100% of all circumstances. You accept it as fact. That's a key difference that the episode's dialogue failed to convey.

After reading some discussion and watching the episode again, i get the sense that maybe the moral was worded wrong; i believe that the 'faith' Twiight refers to is faith in friends. Pinkie Pie wasn't lying, nor was there a trick; it simply happens.

And besides, there ARE things science hasn't been able to explain yet, religion or not.

I'm saying that people who work on crap can put out good stuff sometimes, even if only once (lol John K.). You know, there were probably dozens of others who made the episode what it was, so why roast one guy, other than attacking him for wanting to not be a broke-ass bum on the street? Most of the complaints about the episode could also be applied to some of the most loved episodes by /co/:

Bitch about Twilight being out of character even though she has been stubborn and adamant loads of times before (The fucking pilot, Boast Busters, Bridle Gossip, SotC).

Complain about Pinkie Pie's characterization, even though nothing is amidst either (Griffon, Dragonshy, SotC again).

Complain about gag humor despite it being used heavily in past episodes (Applebuck Season, FWF, SotC YET AGAIN).

Thank God that Swarm of the Century had a straight-forward moral and a writer that has a filmography of shit we've never heard, or otherwise people would hate another great episode for asinine reasons.

    ~Dear princess Celestia~

I learned a valuable lesson today. You may try to understand what surrounds you to your best, but when you read between the lines too much, you might see evil where there really isn't any, and as a result have trouble sitting.
Sometimes, you just have to accept things for what they are, and not let a little slippage make you paranoïd, or next think you know, you might end up fearing the very things and people you love.

    Your faithful student. Twilight Sparkle.

It's pretty sad how this's ended up really.

The episode was amazingly done and lots of fun, lot of great expressions and little hints at how their stuff works...

We saw that pegasus can apparently pull things in the air and presumably have the ability to keep them magically stable. Which we kind of knew from the chariots, but now we see they can do it in the air too whilst stationary.

We got to see Pinkie flop her ears. That was just adorable.

Derpy showed up, and another cool interesting stallion.

We found out Pinkie has a gummy alligator for a pet.

We saw Twilight learn a lesson about denying things that were clearly happening just because she didn't quite understand it.

The funny thing being, in a world with magic there's no reason why Pinky couldn't have some kind of magical ability, and not being a unicorn might be why it's so unpredictable. Either way it was fun. Considering they have manual nature, etc etc... it's not hard at all to imagine some ponies having unique powers.

But yeah, no, because it's slightly sounding like religion we're going to just shit all over it.

And even if we didn't, the trolls are going to use it to pretend we are. We should just be ignoring this entirely...

Anywho, can't wait for next week.

Avoiding sticky situations is cowardly and stupid. It stagnates creativity. But learning how to tactfully deal with them is an important skill for any writer to develop.

"Poor word choice"? Most people here seem to be bitching about the word "faith", despite the fact that the word was only used once or twice as part of the phrase "leap of faith".

It's more a case of people seeing what they want to see.

Can you imagine if we had to do that as kids? Ever ask people what makes them unique and special, or what their big dream for their life is?

A lot of people have no fucking idea when they're in old age still... and these ponies figure this shit out as children.

Call of the Cutie's message for people who don't get it:

Applebloom is anxious to grow up and be a big pony.

She learns to slow down and enjoy her childhood and the journey, instead of rushing into things.

Keep in mind that she was desperate for any cutie mark earlier on. She didn't once consider that she'd have to live with that her whole life. Chances are that they're magic and only apply the right mark, but it was about the mindset she was in. She wasn't considering what she wanted to be, just that she had to grow up right now.

The most overriding admirable quality of this show is that it's not dumbed down for kids. That's why it stands out sandwiched between pap like Strawberry Shortcake and Pound Puppies. Now you're trying to tell us it's just a dumb kids show.

I'd rather watch a show that led to heated arguments on matters of faith, and a lot of trolling, then just some dumb kids show signifying nothing.

Promoting superstition isn't exactly "deep philosophical discussion." It's a transparent moral, clearly outlined at the end, that the show's target audience can comprehend and take to heart.

Same with the cutie mark thing. I have no idea why you guys are so hostile to discussing the messages of the show, but ultimately all you're doing is discouraging anyone from thinking intelligently.

Dino-fag, it honestly isn't anything you've done in the past that makes me dislike you. It is you. You are the most annoying person in any of these threads because of the way you react to people and things. And when people try to give you honest help, you continue to act like a little shit. I want to assume you're 14 or something so I have a reason to understand why you are such a pile of over emotional baggage, but you don't type like a moron going through teen angst, unfortunately.

It BAFFLES me why you continue to come back for more and more and more and more and more. You don't have to lose the name, you just have to lose the attitude.

Grimdark, shippers, furries. Whatever, I can deal with it. But you are seriously the very bottom of the brony totem pole. The way you act during all of this shit is so much more annoying than everything else.

Your name has nothing to do with it.
