The episode is great. The moral is cryptic and, what's the word I'm looking for - nebulous. Cryptic and nebulous.

But I don't watch for the moral. It's a bit of a shame really. It's an A+ episode but for the end which just seems to wrap up kind of a weird and make you feel a little confused.

Personally they should have gone at it a little bit more tactfully. "Some things may seem strange to you, but to others it's normal." A bit more grounded.

Well, Twilight's skepticism does seem a bit arbitrary, but from the context of her disbelief we can deduce that whatever Pinkie Pie's "Pinkie Sense" was, it didn't fit into magic as Twilight Sparkle understood it. Hey you guys, I found this awesome series of movies from the late 70's. It's a completely sci-fi setting with aliens and light-speed travel and galactic politics, except for this one thingy.

Apparently some sentients who practice meditation can use telekenesis and future knowledge. But instead of scientists harnessing this power for the good of all, it's only studied by these monks who also learn martial arts and act as galactic police.

And at the end, it's revealed there's some sort of afterlife, 'cause the main bad guy dies and the good in him redeems him, so he keeps "living" as a sort of blue ghost.

What's weird is it has all these novels and various TV specials and series based on it, and they all treat it as totally SF, not religious or magical at all, even though the implications are enormous, especially the afterlife stuff; that's fine for the monks, but what about the everyday people who haven't spent their lives meditating?

Its not totally sunk. Derpy has appeared in the show many times. She has only derped twice. Its pretty clear its not a permanent condition. Your scenario can still fit, its just that the party itself isn't the cause, rather something at the party triggered her derp-attack. I'll admit. I liked this episode too. Not one of the best, but okay. It had a lot of... 'tiny' funny moments. Odd little background jokes (such as how the box Twilight stood on before her rant was an -actual- soap box) derpy moments, and the Loonie Toon stuff, while feeling a little out of place, still made me chuckle.

On the other hand like many I'm not too happy with the moral. Now don't get me wrong, the message they -wanted- to deliver wasn't bad 'Don't simply disbelieve in something because you don't understand it'.

This is fine really. There's a lot of people out there who look at something they don't understand and demonize it after all. The problem lays more in the whole idea that you shouldn't -try- to understand it. Accepting something you don't understand the reason for as truth is fine. But discouraging the discovery of what that reason -isn't-.

It's like.. accepting that boats seem to sink under the horizon, but never bothering to find out it's because the world is round.

This wasn't the intended moral of course. Not one bit. But Twilights attempts to do just that generally had her getting her hurt, humiliated, and made to seem like a fool. In the end she -gave up- trying to understand at all! I'll admit her methods of doing so didn't follow the scientific method properly one bit, but I can forgive that in a kids show.

I can't be -mad- at this episode though. It was a mistake on the writers part not some subtle Christian conspiracy or some similar non-sense.

I was pretty disappointed where this one went, but is it reasonable to blame Faust for every detail of every show? I don't think it is.

For what it's worth, Faust has stated she has had to "pick her battles" on this show. As in, Hasbro has final say on a lot of things. She's expressed a polite amount of frustration over it and has apologized in the past. She has to add the pets that they sell the ponies with and make them relevant to the show, she has to add the playsets, like the balloon, and make it seamless.... I sort of doubt she had much creative control over this moral.

Well, yeah. Twilight wasn't exactly being particularly scientific by dismissing it out of hand. But she was even more egregious by throwing her hands up in the air and giving up on discovering exactly how it happens. So far anyway MLP has presented a pretty rational view of magic; it's the result of careful study and effort, even if some innate talent to make it work. Twilight treats it similarly in the ep, claiming that her magic is understandable and explicable. She's much more a scientist than a magician, even if the laws of the world she's dealing with are different from ours.

Horribly written. Bad storyboarding. Just everything that was happening was a mess the entire time, the episode didn't even make sense.
Painful dialogue. Every single line sounded forced, like even the voice actors couldn't get into it. Characters acting OOC even.
