It's interesting how with animation today the creators manage to have what could be called an ongoing discussion with the fans. I guess the causes of this are

Part 2 up, it seems.

The same people that make the show probably have been here, are here, and will be here. They have enough savvy to know that anything with a modicum of popularity will be treated this way in a public forum. They are not children who will wince at seeing the fetishist concepts that always shadow a budding fanship.
That doesn't mean they like nor are influenced by this, it just means they can know about things and still do their jobs without shitting a brick and dropping spiritual/political/sexual connotations into every nuance and character shown.
The meme of derpy eyes was expanded when an animator made a background pony with said expression. 4chan took the ball and ran with it, expanding a little into the backstory.
As the popularity of the show was expanded thanks to /co/, Lauren Faust said she was greatful and thanked our support. She even took the speculation about Derpy with humor and said a Background Pony, Dipsy-Doo, could be thought of as Derpy if we wanted.
This recent episode was a true nod to the fans with a small animated clip with Derpy making a delivery in her special way.

I felt this episode was a little randumb, but given it was Pinkie's episode I suppose that's acceptable.

The whole vibe I got was "HEY KIDS BELIEVE IN RELIGION", which feels uncomfortable in a kids show to me really. Especially as the sciencey one was shown to be wrong, the sciencey one who is also magical that is... quite the juxtaposition.

Nice show, Pinkie rolling on the floor was adorable, Fluttershy is still the best.

Therefore this episode was about being open-minded and accepting anothers views as a realistic possibility, Life is such... It's got surprises around every corner, what you once thought impossible you might find out is actually possible and vice versa. I think this is the "actual" moral of the story.

All in all this episode had some pretty funny parts, but I'd call it one of the weaker episodes in the series so far. It's better than Call of the Cutie, but probably below Look before you Sleep.

Yeah, I have to agree. This was a pretty horrible lesson for kids. "Fuck scientific discourse, just go along with hunches and untestable claims". There was direct parallel to what happens with those who claim to have extra sensory powers completely failing when examined.
