Thats one way to put it I suppose. Granted, this is all wanton speculation, but I think it works like this:
The elements are the most powerful force in Equestria, they are essentially the power that makes it possible. If you use the elements all together yourself, and use them correctly, you sort of gain their power, and become a huge ass princess thing. IE Celestia. However you can only use the elements like this once, once you ascend, thats it, the elements are closed to you.
This is why Twilight is important, and more importantly, her relationship with her fiends. Celestia, though she has the power of the elements to rule Equestria, can no longer use them herself. Twilight however, when splitting the elements among her friends, can use them as needed without ascending.
I also think the Elements are responsible for Night Mare Moon. They used to be kept in Luna's castle as shown in the prologue, so she knew about them. If she attempted to use the elements like Celestia did, but screwed it up (perhaps the jealousy/rage she was feeling screwed up her friendship, which is coincidentally the controlling, crown-granting element) I could easily see them transforming luna into a corrupt version of what Celestia is. IE Night Mare.
