So how is it determined which creatures are capable of speech in Equestria? Is it just hoofed animals that can speak? I've seen ponies (of course), a zebra, cows, and a mule all speak. A great speculation that I wanted to see discussed more was the female/male social dynamics. It's come up once or twice, but usually doesn't go in depth, as the conversation was more about . . erm, harems.

I speculated that much as women only recently are gaining more and more ground in jobs/leadership positions, something similar happened not long ago in Equastrian society only in reverse. It's currently at the point where there is no out right sexual discrimination, it's still quite plain that males typically hold male-stereotyped jobs of physical labor and I've yet to see one in a leadership position. I suspect that the society has been run by females, and a sort of quiet sexism has gone on for many years before a sort of male-protest.

Hopefully this will spark a little more speculation. I could go on. but I do need to eat.

What do you want to hear exactly? Males aren't subjugated or anything. They're around, doing stuff. There's no sexual discrimination in their world. It's a small, close-knit society of happy magical ponies leading an idyllic life. They're all equal. There's some males and some females. The show focuses on females because it's a show for young girls. Women fill the positions of power in the world (all two of them that we've seen - the mayor and the monarch) because Faust wanted to show that girls can assume leadership positions. The show just doesn't focus on the males. And really, I don't care, because I only really want to watch the 6 main cast members anyway.

That so many grown men would develop such an emotional attachment to these anthropomorphic horses is, from a scientific standpoint, extremely interesting. There's a psychology professor I know very well at my school and I might ask him if there is an obvious explanation for this.
As a biologists, it makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint why people would grow attached to horses specifically. The altruistic relationship between man and horse is thousands of years old, and it would make sense for nature to select people who can empathise with the animals they depend on, at least when presented at face-value. however, there are other animals with domestic histories at least as long as horses, and you don't see /co/ fawning over them. at least not at the moment.
