I figure that Apple Bloom and her friends are probably 10 or 11, but that's only going on the assumption that the cutie mark episode is about puberty. The main cast seems to be in their late teens, if not early twenties, since everyone seems to be pursuing their own goals in life, and indeed some of them are in important leadership roles, like bunny waking, tree kicking and cloud pushing. I reckon most of the background adult ponies we see are a bit older than the main cast, though I don't know how to back that up.

Both Pinkie and Twilight seem like college women. Twilight because she spends her time educating herself while still learning more about the outside world. You remember how Luna is a more lightly colored then Nightmare Moon? Well this pony is a more pink version of Celestia. That was the pony's natural color before she became Celestia. I don't think so. Trixie seems to only know simple tricks, but Twilight is able to lift extreme weights that sink her into the ground, grow hair, bring objects to life, and even teleport, etc.
If it was gauged by power, I think Twilight's would be too heavy for her head.

Twilight has a lot of power, but she is also the prized student of one of the Goddess's of the world. It isn't surprising that she knows a lot more than Trixie and the other unicorns. Also, I doubt unicorn horns increase as their knowledge does. Unicorn horn length may signify how much magical potential a unicorn has access to. That would explain why the Goddess's have such extraordinary size horns.
