It's funny, really, the Pony fandom. I've been watching you guys for a while, and it's not hard to figure out what's going on with most of you.
You hear about it on /co/, decide to watch it, and see that it's not that bad. It's a nice, light-hearted kid's show with some okay jokes and cute characters. But it's My Little Pony. And you say to yourself: "I just LIKED My Little Pony!" And that's just such a hilarious thing, isn't it? That you, a grown-ish man, LIKED something that was previously mindless colorful chatter for little girls to stare at and beg their parents for toys over. Now really it isn't that big a deal - this new show is pretty good. But since that's in such bold contrast with your expectations, its decency turns into hilarity. From the hilarity of your introduction, you come to like the show, and put your own creative spins on it - singling out background ponies and tossing around names for them, making or spotting cross-over material like Dr. Hooves, but all the while highlighting on the hilarity of the fact that we're all talking with such vigor, such gusto, about *My Little Pony*. Because that's just such an unexpected, wacky thing to be talking about.
In other words, your disapproval of My Little Pony is integral to your love of it. You only like it so much because you know it's a very silly thing to do so. Kind of like hipsters, but less intentional, less like douche-bags, and more fun. |
