[ The Subject of New Threads & The Generals ]

Please check the MLP:FiM Thread Locator and
Archive before going out and about and starting
a new thread. /co/ doesn't mind if we stay in
a general thread, but the biggest complaint I
see from them is that there are multiple threads.

A new general should not be made until the official
general is on the brink of autosaging into 404 hell,
or is at the image limit (150 pics). Once a new one
is established, it should be posted at the end of the
old general and everyone needs to herd themselves to
the next.

Obviously trolls & haters cannot be helped.

New System: When the old general thread dies, the
general thread image is to be deleted and placed
onto the new one. Old general will be archived.

We all know I love OCs. But there is a fine line that I'm not sure how to even describe. I think designing ponies that would more than likely fit in with the show are great, it shows creative talent and makes a fantastic character concept.

But then you have the awkward try hards, those who don't know how to make concepts, themes, or color ideas... Or just those weird "furry" ponies...? Just no.

It's a delicate line that has to be watched. Because the moment people start getting into OCs and go "OMG YOU COPYING MEEE" I'll kick some teeth in.

Nothing is considered "original" any more. You just have to have fun with it and enjoy making a solid GOOD character. Not a self-insert, just a well rounded character that in imagination could actually play a good role in ponyville.

I hope we don't stop making Pony OCs because I adore seeing the creativity put into them.

OC's are fine as long as they're kept in their own sphere of fanart. I don't mind them until people start shipping them with canon characters or turning them into flawless heroes who fix everyone's problems.

GOOD OC'S: Funny, cute, or interesting ponies who feel like they fit into the setting well and don't mess around with the canon. Examples: Sooty and Smoggy, Rainy Day, Mocha Delight

BAD OC'S: Ponies who seem to serve no purpose or have no personality; ones who are written as being related to and/or in love with canon characters, or who otherwise impose the creator's will onto the setting; ones who are obviously rip offs of existing characters. Examples: Actually, the fandom seems to be pretty free of these so far! But that will probably change sooner or later...

Since the only way I can contribute creatively is through the writing of fan fiction (which has somehow become an expected staple of pony threads now), I felt really weird when I realized I had created an OC in my "Junior Speedsters Forever" in the form of Stormy Skies. He was a shallow asshole of a character that only existed to annoy Gilda.
There were other background characters, but he actually end up with some focus on him during the story and I ACTUALLY felt bad for creating such a generic bully character and it sort of ran completely contrary to the point of the damn story.
So I then had to give him a conclusion scene that showed he was actually a person and not just a device to help move the story along. And in doing so I created an entire alternate interpretation of the character. It's kind of my favorite scene in the whole story now.

So yeah, it's a bloody fine line.

Sitting here stewing in pre-waking fog, the following words floated through my brain:

I just got back from my Geology of Natural Hazards course about twenty minutes ago.

I've had to create a number of OCs in my stories. I don't like to create OCs in theory, but sometimes plot demands OCs. I'd rather have a good story with an OC, then ruin the story by forcing a canon figure to act out of character. For example, in one story I gave Twilight a boyfriend. The lesbian thing gets old fast when you do it for all the characters, and there's a shortage of male characters, so I came up with an OC. In another, a request, I created a child soldier. Obviously canon characters won't work, so I created a brother for Zecora. In another I had to invent Twilight's mom. In another Fluttershy's father. OCs aren't great, but there are things worse than OCs.

I'm not a huge fan of OC's (I don't dislike them, they're just not my cup of tea. I mostly just don't pay attention to them) but sometimes they are impossible to avoid in fanfiction, and I've begun to see fic OC's as unique entities from art ones.

When I wrote "The First Wrap Up" I had a similar experience to yours. I originally was going to have Apple Bloom raise the objection about unicorns not being allowed to use magic during Winter Wrap-Up, but it kind of felt forced since she isn't a unicorn and thus isn't as personally invested. There were no other unicorn child ponies at the time (this was before Call of the Cutie aired) so I ended up creating Shimmer to give the objection instead.

She was meant to just be a plot device to get Applejack talking, but she ended up being central to the whole theme of the story, and learning a friendship lesson to boot.

So yeah, OC's in fanfic are an odd phenomenon, often quite different from those in fanart.

I'm really finding the tutorials useful. I'm getting really good at drawing regular ponies on model. But I was wondering if anybody could draw a more advanced tutorial. I personally think there's nothing wrong with OC's to an extent. Sometimes they're necessary to advance the plot of a story without making the main characters act out of character. Fan drawn ones are good too as long as they fit within the context of the show and don't overshadow the main characters. In other words, as long as the OC isn't some overpowered or otherwise godly levels of perfect then there's nothing wrong with creating them for your enjoyment. at some point we've ALL created OCs of our favorite shows because it's fun and good creative practice.

and just for the hell of it, here's mine. SunnyDelight. She wants nothign more than to make her friends happy. Sometimes in her exuberance she says the wrong thing without realizing it or comes off more brash than she should and always speaks her mind, which can sometimes get her in trouble. but she means well.

No. Because no. My favorite cartoona as a kid were the Bugs Bunny shorts, and I never shipped/OCed anything into that. I also loved TMNT and GI Joe, and I never shipped/OCed anything into that.

There are certain fandoms -- Sonic, Invader Zim, furries in general -- where the fans are so desperate for affection/friendship/sex that they ship themselves into the stories with OCs.

This is not as widespread as you seem to think it is.

Also, the description of your character is highly Mary-Sue-ish and fits right into the Sonic fandom.

ok, I've had a go at making a OC Pony...

he's is a Pegasus, he works as a map maker, but has the tendancy to crash while trying to draw and fly at the same time.

He's not the fastest Pegasus, but he can fly higher then most to do his job (and to avoid crashing), his mane and tail are abit of a mess as he's more interested in making maps.

His Cutie Mark is a Compass Rose.

My only problem is his name for which I'm not sure what to call him, also will colour at some point.

A little bit of it is fun, even expected. But it's hit an unusual high these last two weeks, and it's brought on some kind of disturbing material. Not all of us enjoy the show with shippings and fapfics/horror fics, but that seems to be the majority of the creative output these last two weeks. Seeing Rainbow Dash being a lesbian or getting carved up by Pinkie Pie or Luna getting played with by Trixie (or Celestia) the umpteen-zillionth time starts getting old fast, especially for us non-furries.
I'm not saying these users shouldn't be contributing, or that their work is poor; rather, the subject matter is starting to wear thin.

Venture Bros, despite being awesome, has nowhere near as many threads or fans on /co/ as MLP does. There's a ton more people making a ton more posts about MLP than Venture on here. OF COURSE there's going to be more shipping. Welcome to math.

And there is almost no self insert in the majority of fanfics I've read. Neither is there . . . okay, there is a lot of erotic fanfics, but I think they're starting to become less in number to more PG ones.

You could probably count the number of erotic fanfics that are actually erotic on one hand. Most don't have detailed sex and the ones that do are maybe two sentences at best. I can think up three erotic fanfics that are an exception to that.

So, why when people request shipping/porn fanfics, those get made right away, but when I request a fantasy adventure story, I'm ignored? There are a couple of good fics i the spirit of the show, but most of it is just grimdark, shipping and porn.
