    [ Making new threads ]

Please check the thread locator before starting
a new thread. The biggest complaint from
/co/mrades is that there are multiple concurrent threads.
A new general should not be made until the official
general is on the brink of autosaging into 404 hell,
or at the image limit, 151 images. Once a new General
is established, it should be linked to at the end of the
old General, and everyone should herd themselves there.
New System: When the old general thread dies, the
General thread image should be deleted and placed
in the new General. The old General will be archived
even though it won't have the General image.
The hyperindex/archive is run by Archive!noTe.poNY.

I watched the Winter Wrap up. From the get go, I recognised the dialogue as being catered to that of 6 year olds. Not only that but everything is entirely generic and doesn't stand out from any saturday morning cartoon meant to sell toys to children (which is the aim of the show, deny it all you want). The plot was your predictable toddler education stuff and the animation was the biggest disappointment, I've seen better on Newgrounds.

Really I don't see anything that makes this cartoon stand out to gather such an overzealous fanbase here. My only conlcusion is it attracts the same people as moe does on /a/

I don't have cable so I can't exactly watch cartoons whenever I feel like it any more. It's pretty much word of mouth for me now because I'm a poorfag. But I like super hero shit, classic Looney Tunes, various Disney shit. It's just that this did not appeal to me at all.

So lets sum up, you are being biased about any MLP show because:
    -Its aimed for Kids
-Main point is to introduce Ponies to buy.
    -Plot being simple.
    -Animation is "bad".

Yeah how about you actually WATCH the show, not just launch it on background.

because everyone seemed to like my AJ and the ribbon story....new work!

Trash rained down a side of the garbage pile, as Smoggy, the green pony dug deep into the mountain of refuse and discarded whatnots the citizens of Fillydelphia deemed unnecessary
As he dug through the trash, another pony, Sooty, sat in a re-furbished lawn chair, sipping orange juice from a cracked glass, a dirty pair of sunglasses protecting his eyes as he attempted to sunbathe. “hey smoggy!” the black-furred colt shouted aloud, addressing his friend digging in the dumps. “don’t suppose you’ve found any suntan lotion?” Smoggy had to come back up so he could answer that ridiculous question, his face covered in garbage juice. “your black as your namesake and covered in fur, I don’t think suntan lotion will help you get anything.” “semantics!” the reclining pony quickly replied, and they both had a little chuckle before the rumble of a dump truck brought them back to reality, and high-tailed it out of the dump before they were caught.

My tastes are eclectic, and I enjoy shows as simple as Adventure Time, Regular Show, flapjack to the DCAU, Gennedys stuff (Samurai jack, clone wars, Dextar), to Home movies, king of the hill, Rockos modern life. I can appreciate fun light hearted shows to the filth that falls out of Ralph Bakshis head

I even really enjoy powerpuff girls, but MLP is absolutly nothing like it or anything McCraiken/Tartakovsky made (yet you guys keep perpetuating this), its just an extremely bland and poorly produced show made exclusively for little girls (imo)

Yeah it is an idea to avoid some of the dafter complaints. If you want your openion to be taken seriously.

The flash thing I can understand, because it can cheapen the animation (though some flash stuff can qwork past that), and watching some sequences over and over I spot things which do show a level of low budget quality. (For example, watch Pinkie Eat the cake in Swarm of the Century, you see the beard doesn't appear until a second after she finishes eating it)

I do think its a bit stubborn to refuse to enjoy it because of that however.

As for the "used to sell toys" I can't take that criticism seriously for a second, if you refused to enjoy something just because it gets used to push merchandise your left very entertainment in life to enjoy.

The duo roamed the streets, while the average citizen paid them no mind, a few shopkeepers who knew better stood by their doors in case the pair wanted to enter, and thus cause trouble.
This was detrimental to their fun, of course…but that wouldn’t stop them! The comrades made their way back to Sooty’s place of business, and borrowed one of their long ladders normally used for getting onto roofs, which was exactly where they wanted to be right now. A few minutes, and some coaxing later…the compadres were on the roof of one of the shops, a whole new playground and means of getting places open to them. While Sooty had years of experience of jumping over the alleys of Filly, Smoggy needed a little encouragement.

Smoggy peered over the edge of the roof, against the suggestion of Sooty, who was a firm believer in leaping before you look. “come on Smoggy, just like I taught ya!” Sooty backed away from where he expected Smoggy to land on his roof, while the green pony took a fearful gulp and backed up, giving himself a running start for this dangerous leap. His hooves struck the roof as he ran, nearly tripping on the edge as he leaped, and sailed through the air for a thankfully short few seconds before landing a little off where his friend predicted…the moment would have been met with cheers and happy hollering, if smoggys added weight did not apparently be to much of a burden for the roof, and it collapsed right underneath the two stallions.

Except the argument being put forth by idiots above is that it is bad FLASH animation, which it fucking isn't. They don't just have a short roster of basic expressions for the sake of efficiency. They will actually create a unique visual effect for a specific scene and then never use it again, and they do this dozens of times per episode.

Something that kinda bugs me about the show is how pretty much all the conflict resolutions rarely have anything to do with any of the efforts done by characters throughout the episode.

It's traditional animation. It's drawn digitally instead of being painted onto plastic cells.

Your friend's flash animation looks like crap because he's doing a crap job. You can do a crap job with Flash, or you can do a crap job with hand painted cells. You can make it smooth if you do it right using either hand-painted cells or with Flash. MLP, for example, is as smooth as silk.

Right, but it's not really deus ex machina, there's no real act of god. The bullies harass the protagonist, the bullies escalate their antagonism throughout the course of the show, finally at a big party they go over the top and turn the crowd against them. All entirely reasonable. I will admit that it's a rough way to introduce the two new characters. But I don't think deus ex machina is the right term.

    HAHAHAHAHA NO.

90% of the show is Flash tweening. Scaling, rotating, distorting, and translating. Pic related, it's NOT traditional, draw-each-individual-frame animation.

    >>22883753
Flash CAN be used for traditional animation. Superjail is an excellent example. The music video for Close But No Cigar is pretty non-Flash Flash too, although not completely free of Flash tweening.

    Jumping into this discussion.

Just make specific criticism. Saying "It is targeted for little girls" is so broad the most you can say is "It is" or "It isn't".
But by saying "It is targeted for little girls because <example within an episode>" then there can be actual discussion rather then the shit here right now.
If you keep the criticism so generic that any troll could write it, then you may be considered a troll.

Yeah, and most of the "pretty good" stuff probably took a fucking eon and a half to make and lasts for three to five minutes, whereas FiM took around a year or so to push out 26 episodes that are around 21 minutes in length. Keep in mind that the people who contribute to Newsgrounds have complete creative control and have no obligation to share their finished product (or even have to complete) while the staff on any given show on television are watched like hawks from the higher ups and are on contractual obligation. If they don't like something, they have to change it, write up a new storyboard, come up with new dialogue, or even make a new scene entirely.

You fail to take into account length, scale, and circumstance. There's a difference between creator controlled content like Homestar Runner and a television program.

Background ponies will probably start becoming more diverse as the show goes on. The first were just created because they needed to have a bunch of ponies to pull up for a crowd scene, but we're starting to see more and more repeat offenders. By the show's next season they'll probably have loads of backgrounders, and may even be able to sneak in some extremely subtle jokes with them (think the Lyra sneaking out the back of Bon-Bon's house scene).

I think too many of the people who are trying to defend the Animation are confusing that with the Art Direction.

The Art Direction is superb. The world is vibrant and colourful with a mix of whimsy. The main characters are distinct and easily recognizable with striking, unique silhouettes and strong visual personality. The show is beautiful.

The animation itself isn't, it's just barely passable. It's mostly Flash motion tweens which give the characters visible stretch and squash, and that tangible rubbery look that comes from not actually rendering enough independent frames of movement. It's also full of animation errors (character colours change from show to show, sometimes scene to scene; ponies gain and lose wings or horns or other features). The background is full of copy pasted duplicates and duped faces with identical expressions, and similar shortcuts all to keep the animation budget to a minimum. It's not as bad as, say, Rush Zone's animation, but it's definitely noticeable.

There are plenty of good things about the show, but the actual animation is NOT one of them.

I don't know anon, I find it a lot more aesthetically pleasing than the vast, vast majority of choppy flash animation, and definitely miles above the horrible 15fps 3D render shit that passes for most childrens cartoons these days. I'm no animation expert but it all looks very fluid and pleasant to view, for me. Even if the techniques used aren't that complex, they're used skillfully.

    >The hair moves like a sheet of rubber. It doesn't look natural, and all of its bounciness only accentuates the resize-rotate nature of Flash and the lack of hand-drawn animation.

Is that your professional opinion? I disagree. The hair does behave like hair. Or would you like to see Disney Feature Animation grade animated hair? In fact, hair in the show is affected by wind and motion, it gets wet etc.

    >Models
I give you that one. All the cast uses one body model, but despite that they are all easily recognizable by silhouette alone. But that is not a criticism of an animation, but of a character design.

All in all, it seems you are gasping at straws here. You don't have any good points, you just keep saying "no, it's bad".

These are time, not budgetary constraints. They had to create a crowd template to be able to pull up on demand and didn't have time to design everyone individually. As the show has gone on, there have been more and more unique and reoccuring backgrounders such as OPPP and Dr. Whoof, though still not enough to do some of the larger crowd scenes without some duping. But hell, duping in crowds is a trick used in all animation from the very start. Not really something you can blame on MLP or Flash specifically.

Well my point is, there's multiple grades of animation. There's pure crap through crap, to bad, up to not too bad, ok, pretty good, really good, excellent, and Oh my God.

    Roughly.

I mean, for being Flash Animation (that is, animation accomplished primarily with Flash's inbuilt tools rather than traditional frame-by-frame animation done IN Flash) it's quite good. But it's simply doesn't look as good as it would IF were done on a real budget with hand drawn frames.

I'm not someone who inherently bashes Flash, it's a tool like any other. And like any tool, it's only as useful as the time and effort that's spent in using it properly. The animation isn't great, but it's not so terrible that it fundamentally detracts from the experience.

    It's just serviceable.

Your point is fair and valid. I think you're comparing it to animation as a whole, while I'm only comparing it to other contemporary animated children's shows.

    >it's simply doesn't look as good as it would IF were done on a real budget with hand drawn frames
Definitely agree though. I bet the creators would love to have the budget for this too, but let's face it, traditional animation is bypassed whenever possible these days. Blame the penny-pinching corporations, but that's just how it is.

    Things consider:
It is a show meant to sell toys (thus make a profit)
It is on a no-name network
It is on at an awful time
    ...

The show is supposed to be cheap.

Due to time and budget constrictions, you will never get a show like this that is good in ALL aspects. The team decided to do "cheep & quick" things with great quality (character styles and expression) while having "expensive and time consuming" (hand drawn animation) was ignored.

Also, how many shows these days really take the time for hand drawn animation?

I'm not "blaming" it on anything. As I said, I'm fully aware that it's done to manage budget. It's not a major, glaring problem, but that doesn't excuse it as a visible issue with the animation.

My point was simply that the animation isn't godly as some of the more strident defenders are trying to claim, that is has more than it's share of issues and problems that keep it from being the sort of outstanding feature that people should be bragging about the show for.

    >>22884644
    Yes.
    Yes it is.
And the POINT of a cartoon (or any flat artwork) is to convey a sense of three dimensions on a two-dimensional field. That's why things like shading and perspective are used. When something well animated moves, it should give you a feeling of a three dimensional object moving through a three dimensional space. Call Of The Cutie is less a deus ex machina and more the first step of a Hero's Journey. (Technically, the Flawed Home Life and Reading Of The Law stages of the Hero's Journey.) Despite the edict against overatching plots, it's clear that the Cutie Mark Crusaders will show up in at least two more episodes before getting their marks. I bet Applebloom is still the last one to get hers, and gets it in the season finale.

The POINT of a cartoon (or any story) is to entertain . How it does so is irrelevant if in the end it does. Animation does not have to be great in everything, and not everything needs to be examined through the prism of scholarly analysis.

    Reposted from an old conversation:
Introducing the Orange Family, which is another large farming clan. Among other things, this minor farming clan carries a friendly rivality with the Sweet Apples clan.
The Orange Clan isn't so popular as the Apple Clan (You know, real life horses LOVE apples instead of oranges) but they still enjoy of a high level of respect among Equestrians because of their invaluable contribution against scurvy and skin diseases. In fact, The Orange family are the exclusive suppliers of dried up oranges and Grog for SeaPonies, as their wonderful oranges and limes can stay fresh for a long time and so, protect them from scurvy during their long sea trips.

The clan is formed by: Triple Sec, Orange Meringe, Crepes Suzette, Orange Marmalade, Little Leng, Candied Orange, Frosted Mandarin, Red Moro, Golden Moro, Orange Delight, Orange Shortcake, Golden Glaze, Orange Chantily, Caramel Glazed Oranges...

    *inhale*

Big Washington, Clementine Bloom and Grandpa Thompson .
Triple Sec is Applejack's self-appointed rival and among other things, she mocks her for having a fur coat colored like oranges instead of apples. Apple and Clementine Bloom sigh and wish their big sisters would stop being idiots, meanwhile Big Macintosh and Big Washington fought each other once because of a stupid misunderstanding, but once they realized what was going on, they quickly apologized and have been bros since then, sharing long conversations through the fence dividing their farms, all while they sip juice and exchange "Yup" and "Mmm-Hmm" interjections.
Big Thompson wears a leather harness (He pulls the biggest cart of the farm) while his sister Triple sec wears a worn out straw hat and Clementine Bloom wears a green bandana tied around her neck.
Grandpa Washington smokes a corncob pipe, where he burns a mixture of herbs that keep horseflies at a distance.

    >character colours change from show to show, sometimes scene to scene; ponies gain and lose wings or horns or other features
I have never seen this in FiM but have noticed other errors that you have to pay particular attention to find (which I'll post in the next general as this one's hit the image limit).

ex. Celestia's inner thigh cutie mark, Rarity having five legs while being launched out of her bed (it only lasts for ONE frame of animation and it's off to the side), Big Mac's broken lower leg, the floating Red pony in AJ's fantasy in The Ticket Master.

But to be fair, many cartoons make mistakes here and there. They're just lucky to not have made one that jumps out and smacks you in the face.

    >The background is full of copy pasted duplicates and duped faces with identical expressions
If you had a year to finish a whole 26 episode season, the last time you would be concerned about is giving the background characters individual physical traits, especially when only a very small number get speaking roles or do anything to progress the story in any given episode.

I agree. I like the show and watch it, and I'm fully aware that these are budget restraints which was part of my point. The writing is decent, the voices are excellent, the music and songs are good, the art direction(as I mentioned) is excellent. The cut corners on the animation to make that possible, and I'm willing to accept 'ehh' animation to make that all work.

If you just want to compare it to other young kid targeted shows, it's fucking lightyears ahead of things like Rush Zone and Zevo 3.

It would be great if anyone would actually give top-shelf TV animation the chance to shine, but they've created a self-reinforcing system of treating cartoons as nothing but Cheap Kids Properties, and then refusing to push that envelope because everyone thinks cartoons are nothing but Cheap Kids Properties.

It's because they are very strictly following the model sheets. There are way less dynamic poses, everything is rigid. Back in the days they were drawing more loosely and were not afraid to go off model if it helped improve the scene.

Why aren't they in Ponyville Elementary? My fanon is they have one short class each day, for each group of students, then send them home to apprentice under their parents. Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle are in another class. Simple as that.
