The Grand Galloping Gala originated 950 years ago as a way for the noble Pony Families of Equestria to honor the burden taken on by Princess Celestia after the Nightmare Moon event. It was a daylong event, from dawn until Midnight, as a dance and dinner thrown for the Princess. As the years passed, the event expanded to include more guests from more rural and remote parts of the Kingdom, and a problem with the kingdom became apparent to Celestia. Although there was magical communication between the larger cities (such as Canterlot and Fillydelphia) those more rural towns lagged behind, causing a rift in technology and culture. The Grand Galloping Gala was reimagined as a celebration of Pony culture, a weeklong festival where Art, Science, Literature, Technology, and other important facets of the culture of Equestria would be shared among the populace, ensuring that places like Ponyville would not lag far behind its neighboring cities.

Somebody wanted more of what we'd done on the anti-ponies project yesterday, but we hit the image limit whilst I was typing text walls.

This sketch is the final for Malady Tart, the counterpart to Pinkie on the anti-ponies team. She holds the element of spite, and enjoys pranks, but not the kind the victim laughs about too.

She may or may not be an evil enchantress, and I'm still debating how dark they are. So far a few have gotten kind of dark.

Her day job is working on chemicals/potion things, and in her spare time she focus on her passion, poisons and other things.

Probably more like baked bads, sleeping toxins and essence of poison joke than lethal poison, but that depends on how dark this goes.

Apologies on this not being coloured/etc yet, I'm catching up on some work at the moment too.

Tried typing out their personalities and background in one post yesterday and I couldn't fit it all in so I might do it as the finals are sketched.

OJ might have a different cutie mark too, probably a champagne glass with an orange slice or something.

Ignore the crappyness, this was done super rough so I could dick around with the concepts quickly.

For refference, Twilight's anti-pony has gone through about three reworkings at this point. She's dressed like big mac because she was in an accident and broke her horn, losing her magic and her position as a student under the princess. As a result she's been delegated to physical labour, lacking any other talents, and has become a physically strong, angry, anarchist pony who blames the princess and society for her dream dying.

Less ponies on this one so I'll go and explain a little.

Ebony Surge is the element of Betrayal, and the equivalent of an arsonist, but if they had weather powers. She's likely to be greys when we get to colour.

Abundancy is, obviously, the element of selfishness. She is a cat burglar by night and runs an antique store front for her goods by day, but she hoards all the good stuff. Her personal goal is to have everything, and she throws around her money and political influence.

I'm thinking of pulling a Larfleeze here and saying after their Elements of Enmity misadventure, Abundancy stole the elements with her well honed magic and skills. Her guards, secret locations and her political and sheer money power keeping her colleagues from doing anything about it... for now.

Ok... who did I miss...

Orange Juice inherited her family farm. She hates farming, and the only thing she likes about oranges is making alcohol. Presumably if I PG rate this later I might sort of hint at her being a drunk but not outright state it.

OJ also brews homebrews the likes of which can cause reasonable explosions, hence why she might have a particular spot in the group. Also she's the element of Deception, and is a surprisingly good liar for a drunk, angry pony.

If it wasn't obvious already, Bluster is an animal trapper and skinner. Again, if I PG this it might just be trapper, but I think it might ruin the point.

Bluster is the element of cruelty. She switches between being a paranoid, nervous mare, and a knife wielding, yelling ball of hate. She takes way too much pleasure in her job.

I think that's everybody so far... we're considering where the side characters go... obviously the big ones right now are big mac, applebloom, Winnonah and Spike... oh and Angel.

I'm thinking Bluster just doesn't have a pet. It's more ominous like that, like... she did at some point. Maybe a few pets. But they don't seem to stay long.

Not sure how I feel about how dark this got so fast, I'm currently leaning towards a middleground... not as PG as the show, but avoiding things like Bluster being a psycho killer or Malady being an outright poison murderer.

Because she's extremely pink, and they seem to like pinkifying everything.

You can really tell where they're poking their noses into the show's creative concepts, but so far the actual writers and animators have done a good job of mitigating the damage. Maybe if the FiM merch does well enough compared to G3 they'll eventually get the hint that the show staff know better than their marketing dept. about how to appeal to audiences, and they'll back off and let them do the show like they want.

Not going to get into all of that, but I will say that since milk seems to be okay in the FiM universe, there shouldn't be a problem with eggs. Why? Because hens bred for laying IRL don't need to be with a rooster to lay, so the eggs they produce are infertile. The eggs you get at the grocery store would have never become chicks, so it's ethically alright (unless you're a hardcore vegan).
