Yup, one thing I always notice is the gradient in Rarity's hair. Controlling gradients is a bitch.

I'm no expert at shading, but start from the edges. You can duplicate a color's layer, use ctrl+u, turn down the brightness, then delete parts you want to look brighter.

Or maybe make a new layer, turn the opacity down, and paint black where you want to be darker. Those are a good beginning.

They never really explained to me why the hate for Comic Sans specifically, or for gradient colors (I guess it's because they were difficult to print), for that matter.

Mostly we learned it for matters of composition, making attractive pieces, etc. Sometimes you may not like one without knowing why, it's the composition that must "guide" your eyes when you look at the piece (and help sell you something). If it's a font that leaves holes in a wall of text, it'll look like a shoddy piece.
