Chapter 4


The five newly arrived fillies all took their time exploring the extravagant land of Canterlot, which only Twilight truly knew. She was the only one among them who felt need to rest at her home and curl up with a few bits of reading material her abode had kept safely stashed away.

Almost immediately Twilight thought back. “Quite a few memories of this place. Like the first time I met Spike, the first time I ever learned how to use my magic, or when I first learned my profession WAS magic.... time really flies when you have friends. *sigh*”.

She took a look through some of her favorite pieces of literature, some she just couldn’t find at the Ponyville library. There was so much she could catch up on, she felt the trip to Celestia could wait juuuust a tiny bit, so she grabbed one of her favorites, “A Tale of Two Fillies” and sat down to read it, her horn glowing with a sprinkle of magic to turn the pages when she read them.

Twilight figured to herself, “the other fillies will be busy. I’ll just read a bit, and when i’m done we’ll be ready to head out.”
How quickly she lost track of time....

Unbenownst to the purple pony, Twilight had fallen asleep delving into one of her books. She had only woken up because of the sound of another pony beside her. Her murky eyes looked around and saw all her friends who had located her thanks to the other unicorns who knew where her house was. Fluttershy was admiring the forests outside the glass window, Rarity and Applejack were busy admiring the house while conflicting with whose tastes were superior decor-wise, and Rainbow Dash was busy admiring the clear orange skies which she cleared during her free time exploring the skies of Canterlot.

It turned out that the one waking her was Pinkie Pie, who once again felt the need to run her mouth.

I haven't been in any pony threads for the past day or two, did MS ever finish that boob chart image?

“Wake up Sleepy head! Are you awake Twilight? Are ya? Huh huh huh? You sure are a heavy sleeper! I bet there isn’t another pony that could sleep as much as you, you must be pretty tired. It’s pretty cool how you can sleep so deep! It reminds me alot of how much I sleep after a party. Sometimes being the host then can be hard, even for a party girl like me! So sometimes I try not to think how tiring it is and just enjoy the party. You know? Twilight, you know what I mean?”

Twilight groggily opened her lids and looked at the position of the sun. Egad! It was in the middle of the evening! She must’ve overslept!

“Oh no! I wasted so much time! I hope The Princess won’t be mad.”

She was on the verge of freaking out, but Applejack calmed her down. “Relax Sugarcube. The Princess won’t mind if we’re a little late. We just spent the entire night and most of the morning trekking here. I’m sure she can spare a little time. Right ya’ll?”

The other ponies nodded in agreement. Rarity chimed in to help solidify Applejack’s point. “Of course Twilight. Besides, Canterlot is the place to be! I can see why so many unicorns wish to live here. Why, I say it wouldn’t hurt to rest here a bit longer. What do you say dearey?”

It was hard for Twilight to say no, as Rarity put on her “puppy dog pout” which was super effective. Eventually, Twilight gave in and the ponies gave a ceremonious cheer.

Pinkie Pie was the first to pull out a party streamer. “Hooray! Let’s celebrate by throwing a party at your place Twilight!”

Almost in an instant, Pinkie had set up Twilight’s old abode with all that was needed for a party, and the ponies decided to take it easy and enjoy themselves for a bit, until they were rested up at least. Fluttershy invited a few of her new woodland friends who sang a harmonious tune, while Applejack pulled out from her side bag an apple pie she conveniently brought.

Meanwhile, Rainbow Dash just lounged. “Heh heh. A filly could get used to Canterlot. The weather here is much more fun to toy with than in Ponyville. These clouds are really like, 100% Equestrian Cotton, compared to those drabby old Ponyville clouds. .”

Fluttershy interjected as well. “Yes. I must agree as well. The little critters.... they’re really cute, and um.... I just wish we didn’t have to leave so soon. I’d love to get to know their families more.”

Meanwhile Applejack, as she divided some pie among her friends, looked in her satchel to the several gold pieces. “While I was at it, I was able to drum up a little business. These unicorns really haven’t eaten anything as good as my sweet apple acre products. I reckon the few apples I gave here will drum up tons o’ business. “

All the while Rarity was busy adjusting her beautifully coiffed mane, overseeing the beautiful Canterlot, which she longed to live in. She was interrupted though by Pinkie Pie offering her some punch in her classic saccharine filled mood.

Twilight, witnessing all of this, felt like easing up. After all, it was a party. She relaxed her hoofs and took a bit to drink, enjoying the company of her friends. The sight of Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy flapping about as friends was just as joyous to her as AppleJack and Rarity actually agreeing on the luxurious benefits of living in this highly prestiged city, and among it all Pinkie Pie playing Pin the Tail on the Pony.

Perhaps this could even be a chance to have a sleepover, but this time with ALL of her friends. This would be a perfect time to improve her sleepover skills from the last time she attempted it, and this time there would be no storm, or gigantic tree breaking through her house.

“Yes”, Twilight thought, “I think this could be the greatest sleepover ever!”

All she needed was her book on “Sleepovers for Dummies”. She dug into her library to attempt to find it, only to be disturbed by Pinkie Pie.

“Heya Twilight! Whatcha lookin for? Can I help? Can I Can I Can I?”

Twilight turned back. “Thanks Pinkie Pie, but I’ve got it. I should have a spare copy of the book I’m looking for.”

Pinkie Pie simply give a smile and hopped around. “Well, okay. While you’re at it, could you find us some marshmallows? I wanna make some smores with Applejack!”

“Smores?”, said Twilight confused, “But how are you gonna make those? We don’t have a fire going?”

An equally confused Pinkie Pie looked back at her. “What are you talking about silly filly? I Thought you already had a fire going? Can’t you smell the smoke?”

The purple pony raised her snout, and indeed, it was the smell of fire! Twilight looked around and tried to find the source of where it was coming from, when Rainbow Dash sensed it too.

“Yuck! What smells like burning wood? Here, let me open a window so this place isn’t so stuffy.”

She opened the glass panel, which only brought the smell of smoke in even more. When Twilight turned to the glass to try and pinpoint where the smell was coming from, her gaze turned to one of pure horror.

The smell, and the fire, were coming from Celestia’s Castle. Which was on fire!

OC's are fine so long as the focus remains on the canon cast and they are not overplayed. Many times, they are necessary to the plot of the fan story. Just so long as you don't overplay them and keep your focus on the main cast, it will turn out fine.

The thing about OCs is that My Little Pony has a history of being just static, plastic horses that all look more or less EXACTLY THE SAME. Little girls who don't care for the media probably go for the ones that are their favorite colors, and if the older kids can't find one in their favorite colors, they break out the paint and brushes.

As far as I can tell, Mocha Delight was the only OC that was actually used as a...ponysona? All of the other ponies I've seen are people just messing around with design elements, which is fine. I habitually avoid fanfiction, so I admit I can't say with certainty that people aren't doing the whole character insertion thing, but as far as fan art is concerned, I don't think making up pony designs is inherently a problem.

The problem with OCs is that their creators may be good at DRAWING them, but they still ignore how to use them or how a character is supposed to work to make a story work as well.
9/10 times a OC is nothing but a concentration of everyone's abilities and powers, and instead of being PART of a story, the story itself is twisted and adapted so OC could be the center of everything.
You can tell when a MLP OC is terrible when the first thing you see is a winged unicorn shoehorned into a canon story and does what the cast was never capable to do just because.
