I've noticed her personality is one of the hardest to write for. She has that classy attitude with a high sense of standard in both herself and those around her. That in itself presents an odd problem
When written for younger characters, this tends to default to an uppity/snobish girl with the air of superiority, which most people dislike. When tempered with age, regret or tolerance, you land up with the mature lady of class, who believes everyone can better themselves through refinement, and takes it upon herself to mentor those who may need it (usually an older woman becomes a mentor for said uppity bitch).
Rarity has all the merits of an elegant, refined woman, without that selfish/venomous attitude. She also carries an air of superiority, but treats it as something others should aspire for, rather then seeing them as lowly/unworthy because of it. In fact, the only things she won't tolerate is a complete disregard for basic manners and malicious behavior (ie insults).
Despite what some think, she is a generous character (even when she directly benefits from her own actions). That trait manages to keep her from crossing that line into becoming a shallow uppity elitist bitch that everyone here seems to loath.
and yes, a lot of thought was put into this. I normally can't stand her archtype, but at the same time I couldn't bring myself to hate her. Somehow they mange to write Rarity's motivations and actions without having to having to rely on the negative traits associated to that archtype... something I imagine isn't easy, and could explain why she has so little screen time. |
