Cerulean Circles was a genius. The offspring of a sharp-eyed Pegasus and an Earth Pony building engineer, she was always pushing the boundaries of natural philosophy. The reason Zecora was trying to get herbs in Ponyville every month? She was the herbalist Cerulean Circles consulted, and has been trying to mix up a cure for her.

Some very helpful townfolk make certain to keep Derpy indoors and away from the evil enchantress, because the first time she came to town, Derpy looked like she was heading toward the mysterious hooded figure.

Anyway, the fact is, the Brony fandom began thanks to episode 1, and mostly grew out of the two-week wait for ep 2. Most of the MLP fandom started with the first two eps, so why would anyone think they'd drive people away?

I doubt I would have given the show a chance without the first two. They set up a mythology and an adventure vibe that made it clear that this show was more than just cute ponies having tea parties and pooping rainbows.

When I started the series there were only 4 episodes out. So I watched the first two. I thought it was alright but it still seemed to follow the whole "defeat evil with kindness and love" shtick that I never really cared for. But I hung around pony threads and when I was bored watched a couple more episodes. Obviously they are very different from the two-parter, and I kind of enjoyed them more.

So I understand the people who say not to watch the first two episodes first; the series by the large is very different from them. But at the same time they are the best episodes for introducing the characters and setting. So I say watch them in order:

If you hate the first episode, then it wasn't meant to be.
If you make it through the second and are kind of indifferent, try some of the other episodes; the series gets better.
If you aren't won over by three or four episodes then its just not your thing, no big deal.

When someone asks me to try a series I do more than just watch one episode, I get the feeling that is true of a lot of /co/mrades as well. We all know every series produces good and bad stuff and that no single episode is going to appeal to everyone. If someone is earnestly going to try the series their not just going to watch one epidsode unless they absolutely hate it.

I'm kind of rambling, but these arguments over which episodes to watch first are asinine. Either someone will give the series a fair watch or they won't and thats all there is to it.

I think I'm gonna give up on /co/ for a few hours and come back later.

To be honest, I didn't care for the first episodes.

An evil 'darkness' pony being defeated by friendship and magic wasn't all that different from what Lauren had complained about from the first series-- girls solving problems by crying or making friends.

I stopped for a little while after the first two. Went back to watch more, and got totally hooked. I liked the first two enough to think it was genuinely charming, however, and while the plot didn't endear me, the individual characters did. Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie in particular won me over. I can understand why a few people might say to avoid the first two, but it's less than an hour, might as well watch everything chronologically. If you can't bare to make it through two whole episodes, I don't think you have the patience to watch anything.

I thought the consensus was to recommend Applebuck Season to newcomers? Week after week that's what I've seen, and IMO it does make a pretty good start.

The only one I would really not recommend to start with is Bridle Gossip since most of the humor comes from already knowing the ponies' personalities and seeing how the curse has changed them.

I'm gonna help you guys out on this one: The two part Pilot is an example of what Faust wanted to show to be, and what Hasbro rejected. While It was okay to have villains every now and then like the original "MLP and Friends", making a Magic Girl Team Show out of MLP franchise is stretching it. This would lead into the Don't Do Drugs episode.
