There's a small Female pony template, and a much larger Brony template, around here somewhere. As well, there's a nice tutorial pone of the trippers wrote up, and as soon as I get home to my tablet pen I'm going to draw up a template for a real, professional-level Style/Character Sheet that people who really want to flesh out their character design can use.

And here it is. As a sketch, anyway. I will color it later. I tried to use a lot of horizontal and vertical forms as it evokes a calm, well grounded feeling. To keep the eye from being stuck in the corner, I added a tree that intercepted the pathway where Fluttershy was so the eye would curve to the left and up to create a balanced composition.

I personally think of Derpy as being air-headed and forgetful because she's always deep in thought about the things most people don't really think about. Like why call it a flea market if they don't sell fleas, and the like. Sorta like Osaka, if you'll pardon the Azumanga Daioh reference. When confronted or asked a question, she'll be at a loss or wind up talking to herself about what she's currently musing about. However, I don't think she's above goofing off sometimes too, and her sense of humor may be a bit spontanious, just not all the time. I wasn't trying to get people to "like" Derpy, because I figured no one who dislikes her was going to read the fic in the first place. I was just taking my interpretation of her and throwing in the idea that she's a gifted poet, because I liked the idea that she communicated with the world that way. In my mind she's not stupid, or even random; she's just really odd, and happy with who she is.

I tried to make some of her sayings make sense in odd ways ("more rectangles to deploy" because letters are rectangular, for example. She's just saying "got more work to do.") but I guess I made them too obtuse. Oh, well.

Anyway, Derpy is a totally subjective character. We can't even agree on her NAME, for crap's sake, so it might be best to just accept that everyone's Derpy is a little different and allow people to enjoy whatever version works best for them.

Let's look at Lauren Faust's tastes in anime: Totoro, Spirited Away, Inuyasha, and Ranma 1/2. Ranma is what really suprises me: it means she's fairly oldschool, and it would explain her willingess to subject her female characters to slapstick comedy.

Yeah, they're not really that important until you get into major, major stuff, like characters you want to keep forever and ever and/or want to appeal more easily to a ton of people. They're a bit time consuming when you get down to big ones. You'll have pages and pages of Canon Changes (changing major details about the characters), because who knows, maybe you'll come up with one that you (or your manager) like more than the original design? Pretty much... I already had tons of drawings of the characters, so they were mostly rounded up. I hadn't thought of a color scheme by then, but the characters had clear themes, so it was pretty easy to come up with.

The good thing about Takahashi's comedy work is that in her stories, EVERYONE is a selfish asshole. Male and female, they're all motivated by their desire for character X, and inevitably they have to hurt someone else to get that person, a fact which does not bother them at all.

The same formula worked wonders in Urusei Yatsura. Ranma has exactly one character who can be considered a good person (Kasumi) and everyone else is a selfish backstabber or out and out douche. It's hilarious because she can turn anyone into the victim and you never feel bad for them. They ALL deserve it.

Come to think of it, Takahashi jumped the shark the second she started having actual good guys and bad guys in her stories. InuYasha is proof that when she tries to do good vs evil (instead of amoral vs amoral) her work is boring as hell.
